Ok I bought an old 79 IH s1854 the lineset ticket indicates a cm5252a which I am 99% sure it is
My question is where 5th is (the 2 speed rear was stuck in low when I drove it home so the torque was so much it was hard to tell the difference LOL 1st was out of the ? , 2nd was good for starting on hills 3rd was great for level starts wound out at 2700 rpm at about 39MPH (was a long trip)

so my question is :

is the pattern

r-2-4
1-3-5

OR

r-2-5
1-3-4

conflicting info on the web and I just have dirt roads to tool about on and the tires are not great so it's hard to go and try and with the axle being stuck in low it's kind of hard to tell :)

feel free to make fun of me and laugh I am laughing at myself

Many 2 speed rearends have a wiring problem or fuse blown. Wiring more than anything mechanical.
Most of the time shift pattern is on a decal on the drivers sun visor.
With the 2 speed working the shift pattern is;
1-lo 1-hi (granny gear, seldom used)
2-lo 2-hi
3-lo 3-hi
4-lo ---- 5-lo (the tricky part)
4-hi 5-hi
I never drove one without 2 speed working but it should be just a straight 5 speed.
When 2 sp is working you don't use the clutch to up shift!! You just pull up switch, when you want to shift you left off the gas and press back down and it shifts automatically.
I LOVED driving those transmissions!!

Thanks for reply
While I am a bit rusty with 2 speeds I have operated them and even mastered the down axle change w/o grinding on the 2 speed :)

Sadly there are NO labels in the cab except for the PTO , the shift knob is a tapped 8-ball LMAO

I was mainly wondering about the pattern on the 5 speed tranny irregardless of the 2 speed axle

I know where Reverse and 1st is thankfully my ? is 4th and 5th opposite of what one would consider standard
pretend you are looking at the shifter on a left hand drive truck (the victors of the revolutionary war method):

r-2-4
1-3-5

OR

r-2-5
1-3-4

-----------------------------------

On to the 2 speed the first step is to inspect replace the wiring from the shift lever as it is sitting on the muffler under the cab, I am no mechanic but I know that turbo exhaust > melting temp of most wire insulation :)

I do have 12V at the switch on the shifter

I will probably try and replace the electric 2 speed motor with a air unit if it is a simple bolt in and it is more than wires / fuses on the repair
