Dumb welding question

   / Dumb welding question #21
Was on one job where they messed with that, and I have messed with that[word here for me was messed with],long ago,in another life,,,anyways, seems like the vertical worked pretty good but the overhead and flat don't,,course the rod ain't made for putting open root in and if you push it much, the old ones anyways, fingernailed off,,you could do it[if you had several shots at it and luck was on your side],,,its just why would any body want to,,:confused2:

Have heard they make a lo/hi that runs like a 6010 type,[never been around it but heard],,maybe its in canada.

But its either tig or fab shop maybe mig,,or for something that don't need lo/hi,an xx10 rod in anyplace I ever been for the root,,talking pipe, power plant chemical, etc, than out with stick or flux core,[except stainless or thinner stuff, than its tigged all out].

What did you gap that coupon and what was the land? 3/32 7018?

I used a 37 1/2 degree bevel, 1/16 land, 5/64 gap, 3/32 7018, around 70-amps, DCEN!

Lincoln has some Low Alloy Low Hydrogen rod designed for vertical down, LN-D100 LH-D80, LH-D90. I never used any.

I would much rather Tig the roots myself.
FYI: I'm not a professional welder, just a hobbyist who like to play around. ;)

DCEN,that must be the trick, for not being a welder for a living you do good playing around:laughing:

I used to weld on gas line, have inspected on a few pipeline jobs[not lately],60-70- 8010,,was all was ever used,[we did use mig on a few little jobs],sch 40,but some alloys [and welding engineers] might require a low hi rod,,might not have to build as many good tents if using lo/hi either as opposed to tig, should be a little faster,,,but,,its gotta pass x-ray,and bend and tensile before that.

Its cold in canada.

First off, let me say there is no "dumb question" Well, yes there is the one not asked.Ok, sfar as a "backup" strip go to ajunk yard or recycling center and see if you can get a piece of Copper plate.Clamp it on the back side if, you are welding 2 pirces of flat metal. The copper wont stick,or you may just need to "tap it" with a slag hammer

dumb question... if I could weld like any of you or had someone to teach me, even watch you weld..very few people would even bother showing me the basics. Just a mud dobber in comparison that is trying to teach the younger novilist the basics in welding and cutting.
