I recently bought a dump truck with a telescoping hoist. It was running fine until one day the hoist started to leak hydraulic oil. I am not sure where the leak is coming from but it seems like one of the seals is bad on the packing nut.

I want to try and repair this myself. What would be the best way to change the seal? Do I have to disconnect the hoist from the dump body and lower the hoist while the body is in the raised position? I would appreciate any suggestions. Also, where could I get these parts?

I have been around Dump trucks my whole life and I can tell you that working on the hoist has killed many good men. It's because the bed is raised while they are working on it or even just getting a closer look, the bed suddenly drops. If you do the work yourself please support the bed so you are safe. Good Luck.

Thanks for your reply. I will keep this in mind when working on the dump. Do you happen to know how much this kind of repair would cost at a shop?

Chips, about three years back I had a hydraulics shop tell me it would be between $800 and $1100 to rebuild a three stage off one of my trucks. Never got it done, I had one of the caps loosen up and after tightening it just seeps some.

It seems to me that someone I know bought a new one for around $1500, that would be money in the bank instead of two or three days down.

Let us know what you find out, got one leaking pretty bad on a pup trailer.

Thanks for your reply. I found that the bleeder valve was left open. It somehow got opened while driving I guess.
