Well a while back I bought a little harbor freight trailer I beat it hard so I rebuilt it. And I beat it harder. So I'm re-rebuilding it and making it a dump trailer to use with my jeep for hauling misc junk to the scrap yard (I get crazy stuff, had 900lbs of bolts last week)

So the pictures

What is looked like 3 years ago (soon after purchase, err a couple hours I put some 31x10.50s on it)

A year after (I rebuilt it to look similar to a M416)

So I broke out the my light saber.....errr plasma cutter and apart she came

(dont leave axles upright they have a habit of rolling down hills)

The where I am currently:

I'm making it a bit larger, going from a 55"x38" bed in version 2 too 64"x44" in version 3

the frame is 3"x3/16ths" channel with 2.5"x2.5"x.25" tube

the drum bed is made out of a sections of doubled up 2x2x.125" angle set as a "T" or with more angle

The Ram I'm thinking of using is a 4" bore 19" stroke 3.5" rod
i think its a bit over kill but I might be wrong the cylinder calculator at surplus center saids it will produce 22,000lbs of force at 1800 psi

Here is is nearly done, the problem is the cylinder I don't know if I can get away with a smaller one 2" 2.5" or if it is mounted a a good angle.

And I got this HF truck crane for $69 so its getting mounted

I have two thoughts...

#1) Great Job. That looks great. Both the design and the execution. The dump angle looks good.

#2) This does not count as "reguilding a HF trailer". This is using a few parts from a HF trailer to make a whole new trailer.

Looking good. I am building a dump as well. Can you tell me if the shot with the cylinder connected and the bed up was staged, or did you pump up the cylinder to raise the bed. I am trying to figure out what angle to use.
thanks

Well I asking more about the angle of the cylinder. It seemed to hang a little bit when it was closing.

As for raising the bed I had the mounts for the cylinder just tack welded and clamped in I think I need to mount the cylinder a little lower for a better angle. But I didn't stage it I cranked my air compressor to 120 and used compressed air to raise the bed, it did need a helping hand to get started I think it was because with 120psi it was only producting 1500ish pounds of force.

Cool link

Nice build and ideas. Your cylinder looks like it is pushing almost to straight when in down position. You may have to drop the blind end down slightly to get rid of hang up, plus give easier start on lift.

Thats what I was thinking.

Now I just need to find a pump. I was thinking a power steering pump and a winch motor. Not to sure if it would work I've seen that they run 1200 to 1800psi and 1-3 gpm.

Using the surplus center calculator if the power steering pump moves 2gpm at 1500psi the ram will do 18800lbs and extend fully in 31 seconds. And use a 2hp motor my winch motor is 1.5hp so might work.

You might have to move the axle back some. Looks to be too far fwd. for a dump trailer.
