dump trailers

I have been looking at/wishing for a dump trailer. The one question I have is on the dump hydralics, the one I am looking at has a 5"x30" cylinder hooked directly from the frame of the trailer to the dump box. Some of the others have a cylinder hooked to a secondary linkage that in turn raise the box. Other that a shorter cylinder stroke is there any other advantage to the linkage system?

Many linkage systems are designed to increase the effective lifting force during the critical intitial portion of the bed tilt. Often, with direct cylinder systems, the bed lifting force is at it's lowest when the bed is fully down.

Not certain what sysem they use... but have you checked out the Provonost trailers?

I have a E-Z Dumper 6x10 DX. It has appox 4' single cylinder direct bed to frame. I haul 5 ton loads with it all the time. it dumps it easly. I also have a Loadtrail 12' with the sisser lift which uses a shorter cylinder, now this trailer is 1000lbs heaver than the ez dumper empty but 4 1/2 ton is all it will dump. a 100 lbs more than that and it's hand work in the nose. I don't know if there is something wrong with the loadetrail or if that is the way they are.

It's all a matter of leverage.
What you call a linkage system exerts lifting force at the center of the lifted bed, where a lesser force will tip the same load.
Cylinders mounted at the front of the frame, and exerting force against the back of the box are exerting more force to tip the same load.
The easiest way to understand different systems is to build sort of a model of different lifting linkages, and see how much force you have to exert to raise the load.
The system that works best over the longest period of time, with minimum strain on the trailer and frame is a long cylinder placed at the front of the box that lifts more or less straight up.

I have overloaded a 610UDT with 7 tons of crushed stone before. Had to unload a lot of it by hand to get her to dump. Only time it didn't dump on her own. Started taking smaller loads after that. EZ dumper makes one of the best trailers on the market and are very high quailty if this is the type trailer you are looking for. I use mine on a regular basis on job sites so it is always going to the transfer station or hauling small loads of gravel or stone when we need a little bit for a job. Never had a problem with it so far.

I have a Pronovost 5'x8' 3 way dump that has its cylinder directly attached to the trailer bed. I don't know what size it is (and I'm not at home right now so I can't go measure it for you), but I'd guess it to be a 5" bore, telescoping out to about 30". I don't have any experience with any other type of dump trailer, but I can tell you the setup on mine works very well. I've had it full of wet gravel many times, and it dumps it with no problem.

Thanks Tedk. It seems like no one really wants to sell anything... I finally got Provonost to point me to a "dealer"... it turns out they're a wholesaler, and they directed my inquiry to someone else... How many people are going to buy and sell (and take a profit on) this trailer before I can have it?

Currently, I'm struggling with getting something that is a bit small for the road, but will work well around the woods (like a 3000 lbs rating), or a larger dump trailer for the road (like a 5000 - 7000 lbs rating).

Any suggestions?

Steve, My Pronovost dealer here in New Hampshire which is also my local JD dealer qouted some prices just yesterday.
The model # P-50710/4E 7000 lb. 62" x 99" "dumps 3 sides", was $5040.00, the model # P-50711/4E 7000 lb,
71' x 105" was $4883.00 and the model
# P-5103S/4E 10,000 lb. 90' x 120" "dumps 3 sides" was $6862.00. None of the 3 prices included a delivery charge to get the trailer down here from Canada. He estimated that fee to be approx. $100.00 Hope this helps.
