Happy Thanksgiving ! My question concerns contractor dump beds(both truck and trailer) as that bed seems to be a potential Swiss knife of dumps. My question relates to hauling several 1/2 ton food bins. The drop sides are appealing as I can forklift in the bins. My question is are there any tie downs on these beds or do I have to add those? Anyone use a contractor dump for hauling bulky items that require tie down?...Again Happy Thanksgiving.....Cheers, Gary

Some dump trailers have tie-downs in them. those would be the ones designed to haul equipment in addition to hauling bulk materials.

Here's one example. Though it does not say so on the web page this trailer does have four D-rings. I found that most don't list the rated capacity of their D-rings on their web sites; you would need to write or email them to answer that questions.

Maxum Trailers

Bri-Mar and the other manufacturers have similar setups.

I do have the contractor type dump bed on two trucks. They came this way from city auctions. Very handy. One is a triple -tipper which dumps off three sides. D rings could be bolted to the floors but depending on the material you haul [asphalt] they could be a hinderance when dumping. The door that opens in the middle of the tail gate is useful when hauling some materials as it releves pressure from the taigate allowing it to be opened easier. The point you made about the forklift makes it all worth it , although you could always just tail load and pull out 2nd pallet with a chain. I like the option.

Thanks for the responses guys. My interest is to have a 11-14ft bed which I can fill with non-mulched land clearing debris and to transport 4-6 of the following type of fruit and juice bins .... Harvest Bin - Solid - Harvest Bins - Orchard Valley Supply, Inc. ..... Custom Metalcraft . For the latter each tank can weigh 2K-3K lbs depending on sizes I'm considering. Thus I need multiple strapping points along the bed.....Gary

I have a one ton dually with a 12' flatbed that I use for all kinds of hauling. I have tall sides (42") for bulky material (no tie down necessary) and short sides (12") for heavier material (sand, gravel, dirt). I also have a bolt together lumber rack for longer material, and yes the bed also dumps.
I installed 4 flat strap winches on one side of the bed and a long flat steel bar along the other side of the bed for the hook end of the strap. You might look into strap winches that can slide back and forth on a fixed rail that would make them more versatile.
The setup that I have is incredibly versatile, it will do a lot of different things, but I have to remove and install the different sides or rack for different material hauling.

I agree, with a flatbed dump you can side load pallets and carry oversized loads, plus you can haul mulch, debris, gravel, soil, or grain with the removable side boards. If the folding sides are built so that you can transport them down, that should work, but you still will not have the capacity of a 42" side board truck.
