I'm putting a new chimney in my camp, and was wondering if either style is safer. Any firefighters out there, or others knowledgeable about prefab chimneys? The Duravent website is here.

Thanks

OK... I'll give it a shot.....

Without getting into double wall vs triple wall, aluminum liner vs SS liner, positive pressure flues and a few other variables, when I did flue work the only thing I looked for when deciding which brand to buy for a job, all things being equal, was price and the length/selection of their pieces. Basically they are all the same, just with a different way to connect the joints and one brand may offer a broader selection of straight pipe lengths, adjustable joints or may have a broader fitting selection, such as a 30 and 60 degree elbow along with the standard 45 and 90. Most prefabbed flues even come with their own roof flashings, which may or may not suit your particular roof (for example, your roof may hold a lot of snow, but the flue only comes with a short cone flashing). If any of that affects you.
Also, a nearby supply house that stocks a particular brand may be a good choice in case your tape measure wasn't working properly that day /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. You normally can't mix and match.

Just trying to give you some things to think about to help you decide.

Jstpssng,

I'm in the process of installing an add-on woodburning furnace, and I chose to use the Simpson Dura-Vent Dura-Plus triple wall stuff. There were several reasons why I went with this brand.

1) Local supplier had whole warehouse full of all the parts I needed at a great price.

2) I looked at the Metalbestos brand and really was not happy with the "looks" of the pipe and assorted fittings.

3)With the Metalbestos pipe, I could not physically see any airspace within the pipe sections as the ends are sealed. With the Dura-Plus pipe, you can see the airspace and ceramic blanket. I felt more secure with with this brand.

I yet to see a chimney fire in any of the prefab chimney brands. All of the fires I've seen have been in masonary chimneys that were poorly maintained. Both brands have similar specs., and I think Metabestos has a "better" warranty. I guess it's a matter of personal preference, availability and price. For me I felt better with the Dura-Vent brand.

Aubuchons has a Dura/plus wall kit for a reasonable price, but I've never seen it much so wanted to get some opinions.
Guess I'll go pick it up.

I had a chimney fire in a Metalbestos once, in an old farmhouse I was renting. Never even knew, until a game warden stopped and told me. I shot a fire extingusher into the firebox and it went out immediately; Thanks to the firefighter hold told me about that trick.

(It sure warmed the house up fast though.
