I'm looking at purchasing a duraspin screw gun to screw in 3" stainless screws into treated 2 x 8's that I'm going to use as decking for our house. I know I hear your painful looks why 2 x 8's instead of plywood. I'm building the house by myself weekends and nights it will take forever to get it dryed in I'm afraid by the time I'd be dryed in with plywood it would all be delaminated and I could start over. We haven't gotten much rain this year but as soon as I start putting plywood down its going to start raining and not quit for 6 months. South Texans will for sure encourage me to use plywood now but I just can't risk it even if it would bring some rain. Its only going to cost about $500 more to use the 2 x 8's. Do you think a Duraspin is up to the challenge of sinking a couple of thousand 3" screws without pilot holes or will I kill it and be back to one at a time with my variable speed 1/2" drill and phillips head bit before I'm done?

a couple of questions, ideas.
Does decking mean the same thing as subflooring?
What about using PT plywood?
Does PT plywood or 2x8 meet code?
Can you use 1x8 PT instead?

guyrj33, I guess you'd call it subflooring we plan on constructing the house on it and then going in and putting in tongue and groove 1" x 4" wood flooring on top of the subfloor but inside the plates. I looked at the treated plywood but even screwed down if it gets rained on much it starts to delaminate at least the top layer in spots did. We are out in the sticks the only code/inspections that are required are well and septic. I could use 1 x 8 treated instead I just figured the 2x would be stronger why do you ask?

Check out the Advantex(sp?) subflooring. It's 3/4" thick tounge and groove 4 x 8 sheets. I used it when I built my house and used a leftover sheet to cover up my scrap wood pile behind the shed. It's been exposed to the elements for about a year now and still looks pretty good- no delamination that I can see. I think it ran about $27 per sheet when I bought it just over a year ago

RoPie, the price is right if I could find it there is a chance its a canadian company. I did a google search and got some info it looks like it is a version of OSB but I haven't located a local supplier if this turns out to be what is claimed you are the man or woman as the case may be even if its up to $30 a sheet that would only be $1800 versus my $5,000 using 2 x 8's.
Thanks for the lead

RoPie, Advantech gotcha it is still OSB doing a search I still don't know it looks like although it is moisture resistant it will still swell when exposed to water. The price is darn attractive though so I'll do some more asking around.
Thanks
Steve
