My tractor is IH DX33 with a Hydrostat transmission. I have a couple of questions for others with the same type machine.
(1) At 2400 RPM the top road speed is about 10 MPH (range 3). Is this normal?
(2) If you push the loader bucket into the ground into a pile of dirt that is too much for it (in range 2) it will not go or spin the wheels or choke the engine down. It will spin the wheels in range 1. Just wondering if this is normal for this type tractor?

High speed in the manual is listed at 15 mph. This is closer to what mine is I would guess. Check underneath the HST pedal. There is a bolt that acts as a stop when pressing down the pedal. Yours may be raised higher than normal.

As for FEL work in 2nd range, that is what range one is for. I usually use range 3 on the road, 2 when mowing, 1 when pulling or doing heavy FEL work. Just got to listen to your tractor and select the appropriate range for the type of work. This in no different for any other HST tractor or gear tractor. If you didn't have enough power in 2nd gear, you'd switch to first.

Had to edit here - just re-read post. The engine should start to bog a little bit in 2nd range if the load is too much. You should see your rpm's start to drop.

Mine is a DX29. The road speed sounds right for any CUT, and that's on a level road. Remember you only have brakes on 2 wheels and your tires are not designed for road use. The tires you have will affect your final gearing. I think the R1 ag type are the tallest, so your gearing is the highest. With R4s or turfs both your pushing into a pile and actual road speed will be a little different.

With mine, I was disappointed to find that it won't come up my driveway hill in 3rd range. I can do some loader work in 2, but mostly use 1 for picking things up and 2 for hauling them where I'm going and then coming back for another load. I don't like running the engine at the 2500 rpm PTO speed. I usually run between 1500 and 2200 rpm, most often at the lower end of that range. I'm sure it won't hurt it any, and use the higher rpm when working hard, but it just seems like a waste of fuel to run it that fast all the time.

I'm a gear guy by background, which may explain some of that.

i have a TC33 (blue version)

Range 2 is ok for mild dirt work, but doesnt have nearly the arse that low does.

yes in range 2 pushing hard, mine just wines at me like "ya not going to happen buddy"

high range (3) i can do upwards of 15mph...

if at anything below 1800 in range 3 and stomp the hst peddle i'll d@mn near stall it.

in range 1 on hard pack dirt with good counterweight 4wd i can easly bog down the motor pushing into a pile with the FEL. On loose or soft dirt ill dig in and spin tires (both rear and a front) before i bog....

I have used some HST machines (NH and Kubota) in the same HP range. Sounds normal to me.

I removed the two bolts on the foot pedel. Be careful in reverse, it's really fast.

I wasn't very happy with the reverse speeds when I first got my machine either. So I got the manual out and right there it shows me the bolt.

It's still there but it ain't doin' much good.:D

My TC 29 sounds like everyone elses posts; high range is a highway range; not good for much else. For working the tractor; you use med. and low ( 1 and 2). I have written many emails to CNH about the locaton of the ranges. To me, high and low should be reversed; this would make shifting from 2 to 1 easier when using the FEL. As it is now I have to stop and play to get it into low, most of the time; if they were reversed ( 3and 1) I could just pull up on control to get to low and push down to get to 2 , which I use all the time. Better yet; give the class II units the turtle/rabbit electric switch on FEL control. This arrangement ranks right up ther with the right side brakes on a hydro unit; how stupid that set up is.
