DX33 Starting Problem....

Mine has the same problem. The dealer installled another relay and did some rewiring. No problems since they fixed it. Starts every time now. They said the wire to the starter wasn't large enough.

Jim,

“Expensive roll of the dice” is an understatement to say the least. I went to the Case Dealer today and just about jumped out of my boots! When I told my parts guy that I wanted to price a new solenoid he looked it up and said it was $227!!!!!!!!!

I told him I wasn’t talking about a new starter, just the solenoid. He said that was the solenoid. He was as baffled as I was. He said he could get me a complete remanufactured starter for $305 and I would get $60 for my old core making the complete starter $245.

Needless to say, I am now exploring other options. I have a few days off at the end of the week. I think I’ll pull the starter off and have it checked somewhere. I’ll keep you updated.

You've obviously made the best decision by holding off. I'm good at spending other people's money. That rebuilt starter sounds like a good deal if it comes down to that. I think I'd sure try the ignition first and check the wiring to the starter too. You have too much evidence from other folks that the problem shows up in the solenoid, but that's not where it originates.

I have a diesel truck with a fuel cutoff solenoid that malfunctions from time-to-time. I spray a little lube on it and it goes for a couple of months before needing more lube. I actually think it's not getting enough juice because of a poor connection. As long as lube works, I'll keep doing that because it's so much easier than troubleshooting a bad connector problem.

Yikes!

Got a mom-n-pop rebuild shop around the area that might be able to look at it?

A solenoid that is 90% of the price of the solenoid/starter assembly is just unreal..

The solution to your problem is installing an additional relay in the starting circuit. You should check with your dealer's service department not the parts department. If they do not have the information or know about the solution they should go online to Case IH and get the information for you. Basically you add the relay on the left side of the tractor on the firewall between the engine and fuel tank. You get the power from the fuesed protected side of the 30 amp fuse holder by splicing a new wire into the fused protected side of the 30 amp fuse holder. The other end of this wire will go to the new relay base. You remove the small wire at the starter selonoid and install a new wire end on it and install it in the new relay base. You make a new wire that will go from the new relay base to the starter selonoid. You will add another new wire from the new relay base to ground.
So the parts you will need are; wire, 1 relay base, 1 relay, 4 wire ends for the relay base, and a couple of wire ends to go to ground and to the starter selonoid.

I went to my Dealer yesterday and asked about the Service Bulletin mike10 mentioned and they printed the page off for me. The "Root Cause" on it says " Insufficient voltage at the starter solenoid to extend starter pinion as well as close contacts between the starter motor and battery".

These are the CIH part numbers listed in the bulletin:

1 30A Relay 86529089
1 Relay Base 245731C1
4 Terminal 225077C1

It says to procure the following items locally: ring style connector, 14 gauge wire & female spade connector.

I was just going to replace the switch but decided to do this too, then maybe I will not have to deal with this "no crank" problem again.

Hope this is helpfull.

Is there any chance we can see a copy? Does it have a wiring diagram?

There wasn't a wiring diagram on the sheet I got, just the part numbers. I'll see if they have more info when I pick up my parts this afternoon.
