Early Father\'s Day Surprise

How’s this for a Father’s Day Surprise – My Father-In-law has an older Deere 1050 tractor. It’s been sitting in his garage for at least 1yr+ unused. Apparently it had developed some hydraulic problems that were making things too slow and unusable.
I also noted tires that are way too warn – so what we decided to do is have his tractor picked up – refurbed – and brought back as a surprise. I’d like to get it painted as well, but my Deere dealer doesn’t have a spray booth.

Just for my own information – I’d be interested to hear from folks who have this model – Has it been a good tractor? My Father in-law’s tractor looks solid, just dirty and really in need of some TLC.

This would be a good idea to ask at the vintage forum, or Yesterdays Tractors . A dealer ought to have SOME lead on a good painter. I have painted my own older iron with pretty good results...

Mike - Do you use a real sprayer, or just spray touch-up paint? I noticed his loader arms were the worst - they need a good sanding and respraying - I suppose I could those by hand... BTW - I wasn't sure if a mid to late 80's tractor would be considered "vintage"... cripes, what does that make me!

The 1050 is a rock solid model. A buddy of mine has one. The slow hydraulics could be a simple fix. If could be that the hydraulic strainer just needs to be cleaned. I once had a hydraulic problem on a compact tractor and it was nothing more than dirt dobbers filled the hydraulic vent tube. Painting a tractor is work. Tractors by nature are dirty greasy machines. The first thing is to get them clean. Then you have to get the belts, hoses, and wiring harnesses off. Then you have to take the hood and fenders off in order to get every little nook and cranny of the tractor painted.

I'd be looking around for someone in the area that like to do restores. Someone might want to do it almost just for the pleasure. Could be a can of worms, too!

It's not that its vintage, its the restore process...

Some folks will use rattle cans, but a real sprayer is probably the best...

The 1050's are basicly bullit proof!! The entire 50 series was great, maybe because they were built overseas? The only major repair that is common is replacing the clutch which requires splitting, but its a hell of alot easier to do to a 1050 than a 4010 series!! I'd love to get my hands on one!

I had a 1050 back about 1980. Bought it new and put about 350 hours on it. It was a great tractor. Very solid, all metal, no plastic. It didn't have the hydraulic power that the 4310 has but it was a powerhouse. Mowed, rototilled, and cut brush all summer and then skidded logs out of the woods in the winter. I loved it.

I read some specs and saw that the 1050 was a turbo-diesel making about 37 horse... Is that accurate? I was surprised to see a turbo application in a tractor this size. It must not have caught on since I don't know of any CUT's made today that utilize a turbo.
