Some place I saw mention of a tooth bar that was placed over the bucket edge and held in place with compression (large Allen screws?)- not through the bucket bolts. It sounds quite logical to me, as the bar is over the edge anyway. But, I cannot find the post.

Anyone know of these? It will go on an MF subcut.

Haven't heard of a compression fitting for a toothbar.

My toothbar is held on by two bolts to the bucket, as are all the others that I have heard of. I carry two break over handles with appropriately sized sockets in the toolbox. takes about 4 minutes to undo the two bolts and drop the toothbar. I was initially concerned that the threads would get bent, with use, and would make removal difficult. I carefully made the bolt length exactly flush with the nuts fully tightened... have had no problem with bad threads yet.

I leave the toothbar on all the time... remove it maybe once a year for smoothing and backdragging stuff.

Here is the link. It was a post by DirtHauler on the 3rd page I believe. He refers to his Gearmore toothbar, which uses allen screws, and includes a picture.

Toothbar Awesome

It can be found on their website catalog under rippers on page 76.

Gearmore Toothbars

I wonder if it can be used on buckets with bolt-on cutting edges? I don't think it has replaceable teeth like some other toothbars out there.

The Gearmore doesn't seem quicker to me. 4 bolt compared to 2. Also, if you have my luck, you will have to use your pocket knive to clean the heads of the allen bolts before you could get the wrench in. JC

RollTideRam,

Good point. I was just looking at the Gearmore and wondering the same thing. It seems like the 2-bolt unit would be just as easy, if not easier, to remove. Also, a 2-bolt unit with slotted holes allows the toothbar to be tipped up into the bucket when it's not required; so you don't even have to take it off completely.

By the way, Gearmore does not make this toothbar. It is made by Northstar Attachments, which is owned by Rankin Equipment Co. Gearmore just represents Northstar in the Southwest. If you are outside of the Gearmore territory, you will need to contact Northstar Attachments to see who your local distributor is.

Does anyone know if this type of toothbar can be used with a replaceable cutting edge?

If it is a “bolt on” cutting edge, I am pretty sure the answer is no.

I don’t know about you but I’m pretty tough on my tooth bar. I would rather it bolted on. If you rip it off once you will never get a good bite on the bucket again. I have moved a lot of stone with my loader and tooth bar and a bolt on system will always let you wash the bolt off if you mangle it. What might be easy now could be a real headache later. The tooth bar is on all the time it is one of those things you take off for a specific purpose and then put it back on. I think in the long run it is a nuisance if you have to fight with it to take it off after you have been knocking it around for a few months.

While I do like the concept of the Gearmore/Northstar toothbar, it bothers me that the teeth aren't replaceable. So if you wear out or otherwise damage a tooth, you have to replace the whole thing.

I agree with Timber and he makes a good point. I have no idea how much, but there's got to be a lot of stress on the toothbar when engaged. I would want the best/sturdiest/stongest attachment possible. I also leave mine on all the time and have never had to remove it yet. Of course everyone's needs differ.

It seem's to me for those who wish to backdrag or smooth occaisionaly, it might be worth it to fabricate a simple cover plate to put over (or under) the teeth. The plate could be held on with large turn knobs like on some of the fork lift attachments I've seen. It would be easier to mount and take off than the toothbar and not nearly as critical in its attachment?
