Hi; Looking for info on first hand experiences with the various food plot seeds available on the market, (i.e. Rackstacker, Biologic, Imperial) when used in the eastern Ontario areas. Specificly, what works, doesn't work, recommendations and suggestions.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks

I am not in Canada...but I can see it from here!Just over the border in northern NY,60 miles south of Ottawa.
I find the Biologic stuff pretty pricey....I plant field corn and soy-beans,leave it until spring.Great deer feed.Deer love the soy-beans ,browse all summer on the tops and dig it up in the winter.Great source of protein.
The only problem..it seems that the soy-bean seed is hard to come by this year..I lucked out and bought three left over bags from a local dealer.
One of our plots..kind of re-seeded itself, bonus for us.If you do find soy-bean seed don't plant small patches...bigger is better..they won't over graze it.

I used a mix called Canadian Shield from Bishops a few years ago and it had a number of legume seeds in it that the deer went crazy for. With the amount of soy field nearby me it would be like trying to decoy geese off a golf course to plant that in a plot:D:D
I think they will all work if your plot is convenient for them and secluded enough that they are not regularly disturbed. The other rule seems to be if you plant something you do not want them to eat, they will:eek:

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

I have many proper farms nearby so can not compete with what they grow but am hoping to draw them in once main farm crops taken in. Most commercial seeds I see have Brassicas as a main theme but they need frost to make them palatable.

Hoping someone in my area (or near to, regardles of borders) who has planted the commercial stuff and hear of thier results, hints and "do not do this" type of advice.

If you are looking for something inexpensive and easy, try alfalfa -- it stays green long into the fall and deer love it.Plant it in August and it will be there for hunting season -- also does not need a lot of tilling. The other thing to avoid is putting the plot anywhere that can be seen from a road or right of way -- deer standing in a plot just seems to be too tempting for some to resist. The other thing you can do is phone Bishops and ask their advice -- they always seem to be happy to give it - JMHO

Good Info, Thanks. None of my food plot areas are within sight of a road so that should help.

Hi! Hay mix seeds can be good for deers . For Alfafa, soy beans clever and peas use Garden inoculant (Rhizobium bacteria) Good luck! Oldmech

More good info, thank you.

Not sure how to apply innoculants, I do not have a sprayer of any sort.

Started discing my food plot and will probably go with the clover/alfalfa blend in the main area with possible "Magic Bean Seed" they sell for deer food plots added later in some of the smaller areas. Been looking at Biologic, Imperial and Rackstacker (Bishops?) but can not decide on what/how/when it's best to incorporate into main 2 acre food plot.

Thanks again.

Hi! Inoculant is powder . Just before seed you mix the powder with seeds. I use a plastic bag. Here we can find inoculant at COOP. Inexpensive I read Benefits include improvement of soil fertility, better root systems. maximum plant growth and yields . one package treats 5 lbs of seed. These bacterials help to fix azote. Good luck ! Oldmech

I'll check around for it (Rhizobium bacteria) as we have a number of farm supply type stores near me (Cornwall/Alexandria). Thanks for the input.
