Hi All,

I'm a new member and am starting to hunt down a tractor for my property.

I've got over 60 acres that was at once farmed (over 25 years ago) and hasn't been groomed or cleaned since.

I've finally snapped and gotten tired of the overgrowth and the insult that it is to the farmers that lived here before.

So, my short-term plans are the following for a tractor:

- Cutting down the really large overgrowth (large trees) with a chainsaw and then tossing them on the back of a trailer drawn by a tractor.

- Flail mowing the fields to return them to not being overgrown.

- Replacing the rotted fence-line with new ones (so a 3pt hitch fence-post driller).

- Grading the property along side my driveway (300') as right now, it is fairly steep. I'm going to need to move dirt, so a front-end loader would be good. Not a trip-bucket.

- Take a field, prepare it for a garden and then try my hand at that.

Longer term goals:

- Keeping the fields from being overgrown.
- Snowplowing my laneway.
- Wife would like a horse or two (she was raised with them, owned them and taken care of them).

Things I've learned from Tractorbynet so far:

1. Stupidity or carelessness with tractors, gets people killed.
2. Tractors are not for cute family pictures, putting your kid in the bucket or letting them ride on the implement may seem cute, but is a recipe for tragedy.
3. Always pull by the drawbar, don't improvise.
4. Overrun clutches on non-live PTOs are life or property saving.
5. Flailmowers are safer than bushhogs for surrounding people and property.
6. Implements weigh down the backend, making the front end more likely to lift.

I don't know if I'm doing something that is of a fit of fancy, or if I am ready for a lifestyle change (well, I know I am ready), but the way I figure, I never know until I try.

So, with this introduction, this is what I am thinking:

- 40-45hp diesel tractor
- Live PTO (540)
- Something that you can get parts fairly readily.
- Comes with a FEL. Which means, it would probably be better if it had Power Steering.

I'm not trying to get back to the land, I'm trying to make my property look like it is owned, not rented. Where that leads me, I don't know.

Thanks for letting me spill.
