just a word of warning. some idiot from china or korea hacked into my ebay account, from there he got into my paypal account, from there he got into my email. after this happened i found out that ebay has all kinds of problems with hackers. he was not able to do any real harm, but i feel lucky. ebay is very sloppy with security. i had seen many times when an auction was cancelled because someone had hacked in. my advice to everyone who will listen is to cancell you ebay and paypal accounts. you do not need an account to look. if you find something that is of interest then open an account. once you are done with the item close the account again. ebay said it could take up to 180 days to close an account. that's crazy since the account was tampered with due to their error. i do not trust their security, and recommend that you do not either. the results could have been a lot worse. i was lucky to catch it quickly--- i check my accounts daily just for this reason. do your self a favor and be warned. a word to the wise is sufficient.

Welcome and most of us here at TBN are aware of ebay and ebay links are not allowed here
:)

I've read that there were people selling the program to hack into Ebay accounts. The fraud on Ebay has been running totally rampant for a couple of years, and apparently Ebay can't.... or won't do anything about it. I second your motion for anyone who has an Ebay account to cancel it. This is, unfortunately, the only way Ebay will ever rectify the problem.

Ebay has its good points and its bad points. I've bought lots of stuff and sold lots of stuff. I've gotten bogus emails and had my account suspended for security reasons. I guess its just like everything else in this World, you have to take the good with the bad.
Seems as though waggy1 has an axe to grind with his very first post on TBN. Close those eBay accounts!!!

Sincerely, Dirt

I've got a personal account with ebay for buying and selling. I've got another set up with my business. Between the pair, I've bought over 700 items and sold just shy of 500. I've had ONE issue with a seller who didn't ship the way he promised and the item was lost in shipment for a while. Seller wouldn't furnish a tracking #. An employee at FEDEX saved the day. And THAT is the extent of my EBAY troubles. I'm not saying there is NO troubles with doing business on EBAY, but troubles aren't "rampant". They're no worse or no different than buying at auctions, flea markets, or from newspaper classifieds. Scams are everywhere.

Just don't reply to those phishing email's with all your personal info and you won't have too many problems.:D 5 years or so on ebay with 200 items bought and sold. The only problems have been with USPS and UPS being slow to deliver.
A little caution on what you buy and how you send money doesn't hurt though.;)

This is not my first time on the board. i have been a member for 4 years. its just that you are reset when you change your login name.. a result of the ebay hack. I did not click on any links on any e mail. one day i tried to log on to my email account and it would not let me it said that my password did not match my user name. it was the same one that i had used for 10 years. i contacted hotmail and they said that they would reset my password and send it to "my email account". now if i could get into my email i would not need them to reset my password!!!!! so i contacted them again and i had to show proof that it was my account by submitting a list of all of my contacts, do you have this list??? i gave them the names i could think of off hand. they believed me and gave me a password. was i surprised when i logged on---- everything was in chinese writing. quickly i checked paypal same chinese writing, ebay same thing. once they get into ebay they have access to all your info on file on ebay. from ebay they go to paypal which is linked to ebay. they were only able to get the last 4 digits of my creditcard which was on file, thank God!!! but i cancelled my credit card anyway. they had tried to use paypal but were turned down, again lucky. they went to my email, all your receipts from ebay and paypal go to your email addresss, once there they copied all my contact info, it was also in chinese. i have had an ebay and a paypal account for many years and have used it 100's of times for purchases and sales never had a problem, until now. all i am trying to do is give you a heads up, what you do with the info is your business. just for the record each account had a differant login and password. e bay could not tell me how it aws done, of course the person i was writing to or talking to was in india and i am not sure that they understood what i was trying to say, even though we both were speaking english---well sort of.. any other questions please leave a post i will try to answer thanks wags

Appreciate the detailed post. Glad no MAJOR damage was done. Not clear how they got you, possibly a redirect. I assume you regularly do virus scans to prevent things like keystroke loggers. I use Norton, even though it bloats my PC, along with Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster, and Spybot.

eBay users should consider having a free (ala hotmail) email account that is used for nothing else, and a dedicated bank account with just enough money for the transaction.

That being said, I've reviewed my email practices and will no longer retain any registration or online transaction emails. They will either be printed out, or saved to a file outside my email client. Thanks again for the heads-up.

I think that most of the hacking is going on, on individual computers (i.e. stealing passwords etc) vs. hacking eBay or paypal them self. Most people do not have up to date virus and or firewall protection. Someone gains access to their computer gets information from it and the person never knows. I am in agreement with FarmwithJunk; I have almost 1000 transaction and very very few problems.

Waggy1 sorry for the problems you are having, please do not feel I am taking a stab at you by any stretch, this was not meant towards you.

Not being very computer savy, I am wondering about am e-mail I got a couple of days ago supposedly from e-bay. The e-mail stated that the seller of an item I was a losing bidder on was sorry that I hadn't yet received the item (drill bit set) and that he wanted me to contact him. I didn't respond. I went to e-bayto check as I believe that any e-mail through e-bay also appears on the message board there. There was nothing there however there were two other messages there, one over a month old, answering questions that I had asked sellers about items that they had for sale. These messages weren't there the day before. Should I be concerned?
