Egg eating chicken

I keep one rooster around just for protection of the hens. I let them out in the afternoons, when it's nice, so they can free range a bit. One of my wife's chihuahua's made the mistake yesterday of walking between the rooster and his hens....I have never heard a dog scream like that when the rooster jumped on his back and latched on. I had to "save" him, of course. He thinks he is a read bad arse like in this pic. Not so much when the rooster got him.

The egg eater will have sticky stuck feathers on her head . I take egg eaters to the pedistal grinder in the shop and shorten/blunt the tip off her beak. They get the idea .

What type of bedding material are you using in the nest? I use those wood chips in a big bag from TSC and this keep the eggs from accidentally being broken by the fat butt hens. Of course, it doesn't matter if one of them is intentionally breaking the eggs to eat. The wood chips keep the eggs clean too. All 6 of my hens lay in one nest even though there are several available, so I only fill the one with the chips anymore. I use to use hay but they pushed the hay out too much and the bottom of the box would be exposed and one of the lard butts would surely break one or two eggs. Good luck with the problem.

We have problems with chickens breaking eggs if we don't keep up with the shavings in the boxes. Have to have a lot of shavings in the box.

I don't know why, but the shaving stay better in the box too. A long time ago I used hay and the hens would have it all out of the box and scattered all over the pen. Wood Shavings stay put!
