I'm about to complete my own bushhog (see attachment.) Only work left is to add the tires (if I really have to add the tire.) I suppose the height of the cutter should be flexible(automatically adjustable) according to the shape of gorund surface. I say this flexibility in the cutter height should be elastic (reversible to its original height quick). But plastic adjustment too makes some sense as tractor is moving together with the attachment. Maybe, I should ask this question like that "solid tire or pneumatic tire" (ps. no laminated tire as I don't favor it. Am I correct? You are experienced cutters;-)

Not quite sure what you mean Nomad but most cutters hinge at the lower three point connections and ride on the tailwheel. This allows the tractor/cutter combo to flex in the middle to better follow ground contours. Theoretically, you could eliminate the tph top link altogether but in actuality you'll still want it there for raising and safety. You'll want some flex in the top link via an extra link or some use a chain as a top link. Much harder to describe than picture but I don't have a picture handy /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't know why you don't like laminate, but if you want the tire to last a long time, you need a laminate tire. As far as having a tire or not, I know shredders don't have tires in all parts of the world. Looks like it would work better with one, but I don't know, I have never tried to BH without one.

You may get away without the tail wheel but you are really going to need to add the gearbox & blade to that picture to make it work /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Laminated tires/wheels seem to be the best. Had a pneumatic tire on one hog. After repeated flats, had it foam filled.

When you use this design for the first time, you will realize a couple things:

That you need the rear wheel (and it appears that the rear wheel support is a bit on the light side for it to hold up long),

and you will need a chain in place of the 3pt top arm (you have the "A" frame held rigid at the bottom and the top) and as pointed out already, the rotary cutter needs to pivot at the lower 3pt arm connection). The chain will ride loose when actually cutting, but will tighten when you want to raise the deck.

Your project looks good, and I wish you well in its use. Post your experiences.

Nomad, are you in the manufacturing business? I notice a big pile of rectangular steel behind your cutter. Are you going into production on them? Where will they be produced and how can we get them? You can probably sell a lot of them right here on TBN.

Nomad,

That looks like a very nice job.

Its hard to tell from a picture and maybe you have already considered this but my BH is most vulnerable when I turn sharply and catch something with the wheel or bottom of the shroud. It needs to resist high side loads as well as gravity.

Another good thing about laminated tires is they are probably made of recyled tires.

Good work.

Thanks all for your thoughts/opinions.
Yes, laminated tires are made of recycled tires and I don't prefer them. I think I decided to use solid new tires.
Jerry, don't you think the solid tires last longer than the laminate tires? You look like you are a cutter experinced one.
PineRidge, gearbox and blades are ready. Only work left is the tires.;-)
JimMac, mass production? well why not? If you make order of many units, I can buy a laser cutting machine to produce many units.Lol.
RobS, I didn't mean cancelling 3pt hitch by questioning the flexibility in the height. I meant by "elastic or plastic?" elastic or plastic effect of the tires on the cutter height in operation.
Thanks all again for opinions/suggestions.

I wish I could give you a big order, but I'm just a weekend warrior when it comes to implements. I've seen a cutter similar to the one you built somewhere, but my memory fails me and I can't place it just now. Did you start from scratch or make a pattern from another machine?

What do you mean when you ask about the tires? My cutter has a tire that I have been told is made from conveyor belting and tire sidewalls. It is pretty tough. Do you mean that a solid rubber tire would take more abuse? How much more does the solid rubber cost?
