I have a couple of questions.

I have a yanmar 2210D tractor that I need to get started immediately. I don't have the resources to send it to a mechanic so I am trying to work through it myself.

The tractor doesn't have an ignition switch so we have been hot wiring it to start. We just put a new battery in this morning. Initially it started. We cut it off to replace the battery cover. When we tried to start it again it would not start. We checked to makes sure the cables were on properly. they seemed to be. What we noticed is that the ignition switch wires did not spark strongly like they did when we intitally started it. The sparks were small and not strong enough to turn the tractor over. 1st. We know we have to put a ignition switch on. 2nd. Is it possible that the battery is being drained? How should we proceed and what do we need? Any help would be useful.

Thanks

so, maybe the tractor sat around for awhile and the battery was strong enough to get it started once, then the second time was tried there wasn't enough juice in the battery? Try jumping it?
Also, not knowing how you "jumped" it, maybe you fried the starter, solenoid, or who knows? ?? did you see any smoke coming from under the hood? Like a wisp of smoke??

It wasn't jumped, its a new battery. I was just wondering if there was any possibility that the battery was being drained in some way.

With messed up wiring like this, it's possible. Do you have any kind of a volt meter to start checking things with? If so, battery voltage should be the first thing, then cranking voltage etc.
You don't need an ign switch to start a diesel tractor, at least an older one like this. All you need to do is short across the terminals on the starter with a screw driver, if the battery is good it will crank right over. I assume the problem is that it's not cranking, not that it cranks but won't start?

futuorganics,

If your ignition switch is not "On" and you are jumping, or hot wiring switch to the solenoid to fire off the engine, you are bypassing the charging circuit...then there is no charge returning to your battery. I'm assuming no electrical devices are working that are switched through the ignition...only mechanical gauges (tachometer) will work. The battery will only last a short time, new or otherwise, as there is no surplus of voltage to replenish the depleted output. You may get 2-3 starts with a fully charged battery, even less if the tractor is hard to start or not using any form of decompression and/or glow plugs.

IMO: This is the drain you are experiencing.

without an actual ignition switch how do I make sure that the circuit is in the on position, if this makes sense.

If you can make the instrument lights come on with a any kind of switch and then go off when the tractor starts and runs...the chances are very good you've activated the charging circuit.

All I can picture is a hole in your dash where there used to be a switch. If that is the case then there must be several eyelets on the ends of the wire loom that originally attached....or worse case scenario, they've all been cut. If they have all been removed or cut you will need a VOM as Jagmandave suggested AND a wiring schematic for your or similar model tractor.

If you still have the original switch and it just doesn't work or you have no key...It will still work with the tumblers removed. You can insert a screwdriver to activate the charging system (instrument lights will come on) and to the far right will open the start/run circuit. At least the system will charge with the old (or broken) switch. If you have no switch than any after market or used switch with key will "Make Do" but you may have to rig a momentary switch to activate the starter.

Hope this is some help. Mark

**edit** I have attached a wiring diagram that should be very close to your model.

You can buy an inexpensive key switch at any auto parts store, but it won't have the functions for the thermostart. I recommend you order a new switch from on of the dealers who post here, like Hoye, they're not that much money and you'll then have it done right instead of "rigged"

My dad used to say "Always enough time to do it over, never enough time to do it right in the first place"

i will order one from Hoye. In the mean time how do I choose an inexpensive one from an auto parts dealer. I tried this once and I took the old ignition switch to them, I beleive the one i have has five prongs. They said they didn't have one similar. I assume you are saying i can rig it to fit an inexpensive switch.
