I have a carolina carport. 18x21' with 8' high sides. I'm thinking of enclosing the two sides and leaving the front and back open for now. What should I use? plywood, sheet metal-vertical or horizontal?

I would use horizontal metal -- it's going to require less work to attach.

I don't know whether you can obtain an exact match for your current roof color/pattern, but you should be able to obtain a relatively close match in the metal roofing that a building supply store either has in stock or can order for you.

Horizontal steel siding would look the best, and probably cheaper to install. If you are in a windy area, you will probably need more anchors to hold it in place.

My friend did this years ago and was advised if he did this without a permit the city would make him take it off. And if he did get a permit, his property taxes would go up. He got around that by leaving the bottom 4' open during the spring, summer and fall and enclosing it with tarps for the winter.

I have the exact same Carolina carport. I bought it the sides already installed, but also left both ends open so I could drive thru. My thoughts are that the top is probably already one color, mines brown, The sides can be what ever color you want, I chose a sand color to match the sideing on my house, as well as my barn carport with the high center and shed sides. All of my Carolina sheds have the metal running horizonal. It easier to install horizonal because you dont need any other studding material like you would if you chose to install vertical. also if installed horizonal, you can just level the top piece and run self tapping screws to hold it up then slip the next lower piece under the edge and continue all the way down to the ground. Also since the metal is 3ft wide with groves, the groves are 1ft apart, you can underlap the bottom piece by one ft and have a even 8ft of coverage using just 3 pieces of metal to each side. Any metal roofing company can make you metal what ever lenght you need and pretty much in any color, and they can sell you the colored screws to put the metal up. While buying the tin, also get them to bend your corner pieces to cover the ends of the siding it makes the job much neater in appearance.

Don't try to match it, use a contrasting color that pleases the eye.

Hello,
When I bought mine, I had the metal run down both sides to the ground. Then I closed in the back and front and put a garage door in the front. Makes a nice, cheap, quick building to keep my skid steer and garden equipment. I know that I didn't answer your question, but I thought you might be interested in what other people have done. Good luck !!!!
