I have posted a link to a documentary on the status of farmers in South Africa. So far, attempts to get refugee status for these people has not succeeded and is being opposed by the media, the UN and many nations, like NZ and Australia. I made the actual posting on the "Friendly Politics" forum, but it seems only a small part of the forum membership views that forum. Not too surprising given the theme of the majority of threads there.

Unless these people are permitted to go to different host countries, the likelihood of a "real" genocide is very high indeed. I would encourage folks to watch the documentary and consider whether more should be done for them vs any of the other refugee groups in the world.

Very scary. Talked with a salesman from SA at Empire Farm days and the financial implications of just the threatened land redistribution. Most farms use operating loans, very few are free and clear 100%. The coming Standoff is going to be who blinks first and says "I'm not going to" borrow or loan the money for a crop that might be confiscated. The country could suddenly fail to plant and have a man made famine!

Relocation isn’t really a solution. Fixing the political and cultural climate will do far more in the long run. Relocation simply emboldens the evil doers.

Having said that I think I’d be inclined to try City life for awhile if the rural murder rate was truly an issue.

South Africa is definately at risk. Unfortunately, Zimbabwe is next door and went thru the land confiscation and is an example of what happens when the government does that. Namibia is arguably the most stable government in the area and even there, there is some talk of confiscating land. It seems to me that the reason for the re-distribution of land is strictly for the politicians to stay in power.

I had an interesting discussion with some of the Africans while I was there earlier this year. It can be summarized by: The Africans see what the west has accomplished and wants the same. But, they either do not see the decades of work it took us to get where we are or are not willing to do the work to get to the same point. They just want it handed to them and when it is, they don't know how to manage it or maintain it.

If you watch the video, they show that life in the city is no picnic either. The confiscation of white owned land applies regardless of where the land is located, rural or urban. My brother just recently bought a building lot at the coast and the government is able to legally seize that land now too without compensation.

I worked in the automotive industry in Port Elizabeth. I recall starting a job at a resistance welding company that used a lot of copper and other valuable metals. Right before I was hired the place was robbed in the evening as they closed for the night and several employees including the production manager were killed by the robbers. Everyone knew someone who had been shot in a carjacking and thrown out on the street to die. I was burgled twice in 18 months, the second time with an alarm system and armed response. We had a "3 strikes your out" policy with insurance. 1 more robbery and I was going to be un-insurable for life at age 32.

Agree. If people move because of the threats, then the thugs win. Flip side is, if the thugs carry out the threat, people will have wished they had left but it might be too late.

I have known people leaving South Africa since the mid 1990s.

Met a woman and her two kids at a public event a few years ago. She was an American but ended up working in South Africa and married a South African. They left, like so many because of the crime and how things were slowly going out of control. She had to live behind bars in her house, carried money in different parts of her clothes so she would not be robbed of all of her money, etc. She was one of the most scared and fearful people I have ever met. :( We where in a public area, lots of people around, and the place was full of police officers, yet she was still afraid. :(

What is worse for South Africa is that her two kids, about 5 and 9, were exceptionally well behaved, very intelligent and educated. They will be US citizens which is great for us but a huge loss to South Africa.

The world needs to stand up to the thug leadership in South Africa and prevent this genocide in the making. It will be the end of South Africa for all of it's people.

Later,
Dan
