So late last mowing season my husband had the lever to engage the deck at center (on/up), the mower was off or had died. He knew you had to move the lever and pushed/forced it all the way to point to the left (wrong) and broke a piece inside under the hood that was supposed to stop if from going to the left of center. Of course it won't start as you cannot get it in the correct position of the mowing deck being off (pointing right).
I am fairly sure this was an alcohol related incident. Any ball park on how much it would take to fix the issue. I can't even find out what the part is called but it was a metal piece that would pull a wire in the same fashion your automatic off on a push mower engages and releases with the lever on the push bar.
