I'm no mechanic, never claimed to be. I'm sure there's a technical name for the problem I'm having but I call it, "engine keeps running after I turn the key off"/w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif. It's not a problem if it has only been running a few minutes, it only happens after it's been running a while. I've heard when cars do this they say it needs higher octane gas. Don't tell me I need to run high octane in my PT??!!/w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

Any suggestions?

I've heard it called diesling. I don't know if that's the proper term.

Mine will do the same thing if I shut it off from full throttle. If I turn the throttle all the way down and wait about 15 or 20 seconds, then shut it off, it won't "run on".

Don't know if you have a gas or diesel engine. On a gas engine if idle is set too high it will diesel or run on.

Chances are you've got carbon deposits on the cylinder heads that stay hot and ignite the incoming fuel mixture. Give it a good long run and clean it all out.

Egon has a good point.

The 400 series of Power Tracs are gas engines. I tend to run mine near full throttle most of the time to keep the speed of the hydraulics snappy. Do you run yours at low throttle settings often?

I have this "problem" as well. I just throttle it down and let it run for 5-10 seconds before I turn it off....

Scott:
My 422 also does this on occasion even if i let it idle at low speed for while before shutting off. It seems when it is hot from running a long time the idle speed does not shut down to as low rpm's as it does if it is not hot. I have used high octane gas, (owner of local small engine repair shop recommends using high octane on all small engines) it seems to help some.

ditto ... when i did this ... shutting down from to high of a trottle setting at the Expert Kohler dealer i was given a lecture: ..... you grasshoppers are always in a hurry. you got to slowly trottle down before shutting the engine off .... .

the explatives were left out especially the ones that refer to an Amish town in Pennsylvania .... that is the short version of intercourse.

it never happens anymore ... that is if i remember!

Scott,

My PT422 does the same. As the others have suggested, I have minimized it by throttling down to half throttle for a minute and then shut off. The engine Guru's say that you should shut down half way between full throttle and idle. (the carb. solenoid closes off the high speed jet). The carb. solenoid does not close off the idle jet, but at half throttle, the air intake through the carb. is supposed to be enough to prevent run on. As I said, mine still does on occasion. I do not believe that it does any engine damage, other than being annoying.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess maybe it's not a real problem, just annoying. Will try all the advice given here.
