Hey all...I have a problem and question I'd like to pose to you all...I have a 1992 MF1250 w/ a E3AD1 Iseki engine. We recently overhauled it with all new parts; had pump sent off to PA for a professional overhaul and then after everything was put back together, I ended up in the hospital and didn't get to hear the first startup. My brother and friend, however, did and they said it got red hot almost immediately. They think it's the water pump. What do you guys think? At least, it's been in my garage, out of the weather for the last couple years. Oh, I almost forgot, I had the radiator completely overhauled too. Please help...thanks

If it is not the water pump, gasket installed wrong, radiator hose collapsed or some thing simple, Then I would start to think about, was the correct road and main bearings and rings used when overhauled? Ken Sweet

Head gasket installed upside down? Coolent passage holes don't align that way.

Thanks alot everyone...I'll check all these things out with my friend who did most of the work. I was in the hospital for most of the overhaul.

One item; I took out the thermostat a few years back. It was summer time and I was plowing a garden and she got red lined...somebody told me (can't remember who) to take out the thermostat, didn't need it. Feedback?

Again, thanks fellows...

There have been many discussions on here regarding running an engine w/o a thermostat. The consensus is "don't do it". Engines are designed to operate with a thermostat and overheating can be caused by not having one.

Frequently, overheating of a recently rebuilt engine can be attributed to a number of things including: improper clearances ( possibly not having sufficient "ring end gap clearance" and injector pump timing. The water pump could be the culprit but you should able to see if you have water flow by removing the radiator cap.
Good luck,
Jim

A diesel must run at a predetermined temp otherwise premature wear will result as well as cylinder glazing and excessive oil consumption .

You mentioned it got hot before the rebuild , maybe the cause was not found and rectified .

They are exaggerating a little when they told you it gets red hot , that is not possible . You need to find out just how hot it actually got . Maybe what they saw was oily hand prints smoking as the exhaust manifold got hot .

the engine in my Yanmar was designed to run w/o a thermostat , russ

No thermostat easier flow less chance of sticking or gumming etc.yesterdays tractor, colder temp thermostat install..

Does sound something blocking flow..do give update.

Nonsense! Think about that for a while and then explain it to me.

Removing a t-stat causing overheating is not nonsense. What happens is a t-stat restricts water flow, in the block this allows for faster warmup's and the stat opens and closes slightly to regulate water flow as needed to maintain set temprature.
When a stat is removed, the flow restriction is removed also, Thus coolant can flow through the radiator too fast, without enough time to cool down adaquatly.
One has to remember, the restricted water flow i mentoned above, works two ways, it holds water in the block longer, as well as restricting flow out of the radiator so theres enough time for it to cool properly.
