I have a MF 1635 with about 1200 hours. I was mowing yesterday when the engine slowed down and stopped. I tried to restart it and it turned really hard. So the first thing I did was pull the dip stick . You guessed it, no oil. Now the panic sets in. I let it set over night and changed the filter and drained only about a quart of old oil. New filter and 5 1/2 qts of new oil and it started up. No knocking or other unusual noise. Wow was I lucky. I have had this tractor for about ten years and never had to add any oil other than routine oil changes. I poured the old oil thru a paint strainer and I didn't see any metal flakes. To lose that much oil without any indication puzzles me. I did check the sight glass in the rear end and the glass is full. It has always been at the half way level where it should be. Is it possible for engine oil to get into the transmission and hydraulic system? The new oil I put in only lasted less than 30 minutes. The oil pressure light began to flicker shut it off, checked the dip stick and no oil. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for any advice.

Is your hydraulic pump or power steering pump mounted on the engine?
If so and your hydraulic suction screen and or filter is getting restricted you could be sucking engine oil into the hydraulics.

I should have mentioned it a hydrostatic transmission

If you are not seeing that kind of leakage elsewhere it must go into the transmission housing. Has the hydraulic oil turned dark by being contaminated with engine oil? As far as engine mounted hydraulic pumps, I’ve had the opposite problem. Pumps are mounted above the engine oil sump so if a pump shaft fails, the hydraulic oil ends in the engine oil pan. I don’t know how your engine is mounted to the transmission housing. All of our tractors have a housing between the engine and transmission. Crankshaft oil leaks result in black oil leaking from this housing. Hydraulic oil leaks result in clear hydraulic oil leaking from the housing. Some weird things happen that are hard to find.

bad rear oil seal on the engine, allowing the oil to go into the transmission?

If no oil is leaking externally, and it's not being burned off, it has to be leaking internally.
I wouldn't put any more oil in the sump, and would not start or run it any more until you fix it or you could destroy both engine AND transmission.

Is there a oil cooler that serves both the engine and hydro?

The engine oil would discolor the hydraulic oil so that should be easy to tell. It can’t burn off that amount of oil without smoking like a tar hill. Are you certain there’s no external leaks? Check the coolant but I doubt it could hold 2 gallons of oil.

Called the dealer this morning and radios1 was correct, It is a bad rear oil seal. Its not a huge repair job but they do have to split the tractor to get to it. Some good is is that Massey knows there is a problem and will pick up part of the bill. Just how much I don't know yet but I'll keep you posted.
