Hello 4110 owners!

Just a quick question, what type of engine oil do you use in your 4110? Last year I used JD's Plus 50 (15W40) following the dealer's recommendation. This year after browsing on the Deere web site, I found this document CCE Utility Tractor which suggest that I should use JD's Plus 4 for the 4110. Went to the dealer and ask for a gallon of Plus 4 and he immediately told me that Plus 50 is the way to go for diesel engines.

So what is the difference between Plus 4 and Plus 50?

Thanks!

I use 5w30 Mobil 1 in my 4010. Changed at 13 and 113 hours so far.

Uses 0.45 gallons of diesel/hr.

I haven't changed oil in my 4110 yet but I have used Rotella t in my 455. It was at the 2000 hour mark and still performed flawlessly. I was considering Mobil 1.

Changed break-in oil at 50hrs. Replaced with Rotella 15-40.
Winter came, changed to 5-40 Rotella synthetic. Summer coming, I will go back to regular Rotella 15-40. Have a total
of 91hrs. on 2004-4110. have had no problems with the tractor. Runs great, starts great. {once I got the hang of it}
Have no idea what Plus 4 or Plus 50 means. sorry

Wow, some of you guys change oil quite often! My dealer told me they recommend changing the break-in oil at the recommended hour-mark, and putting more break-in oil in again, for another break-in period. They have found better-seated rings and longer-lasting engines this way.

Oh come on, these engines are good for like 6000 hours, how much longer would it make them last. They don't even break cars in anymore, and they do very well. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I would highly recommend Plus 50 (Deere's Diesel Engine Oil)-the Plus 4 does not have the TBN (Total Base Number) that the Plus 50 has. As far as Mobil One goes, I do not believe it has enough TBN-I believe it is about 1% Sulfated Ash (should be 1.3-1.6%). Rotella T is fine, as well as their Synthetic (they are both rated for Diesel specifically)-

Hey thanks everyone for your answers! I now feel better about my dealer's recommendation to go with the Deere Plus 50.

Now I have another "newbie" question: I'm only putting about 50 hours/year on my 4110. Were I live, temperature varies from 30C to -30C. Should I change oil twice a year and use 15W40 for the summer and 5W40 during the winter?

Also I have a block heater and usually let it heat for a couple hours before starting the tractor when the temperature is below 10C.

Thanks!

Mobil-1 is not recommened or made for diesel engines it's a gas motor synthetic oil. If your going the synthetic route with Mobil, you need Mobil Delvac-1 or Amsoil which is also made for diesel motors.

If you look in your manual, it only shows the 5W good at about 5 degrees colder than the 15W. And at only 50 hours use, I would use the 5W all year. The W just stands for winter grade. The 40 is what the oil is protecting at running temp. Or in other words the 5W will pour at what a 5 would pour at, and the 15 would pour at what a 15 would pour at, Whicn makes it easier to start in cold weather. Then both will do their job. When they are both hot, you probably could not tell the difference if you took some and checked it for thickness. That is how it was told me, from a man that worked for a oil company for many years.
