Engine Overhaul Gasket Set

All, I got everything ready to put back together and found that in the overhaul gasket set there are two head gaskets. One which has red o-rings and one which has black o-rings. One is a little thicker than the other. Any ideas on which one should be used? Thick or thin, red or black?

Just a guess, and thats all it is, The thicker one would be used if you had any block or head machining done. If there was no papers in the gasket set, I would be getting in touch with a dealer to make sure which head gasket was right to use on your engine.

All, I received the gasket set for the overhaul on my 1700 and there are two head gasket. One has a slight smaller opening for the cylinders than the actual size of the cylinder. This makes the gasket hang over part of the diameter of the cylinder. The other is slightly larger than the diameter of the cylinder. I'm assuming that the gasket which is slightly larger than the cylinder is the one to use???

You are supposed to measure piston protrusion and use the appropriate gasket, or take the part number from the old gasket. Call your dealer for the protrusion specs.

The gasket set fits both the 1500 and the 1700. The head gasket is the only difference. Use the larger gasket that fits the bore. I sold my extra gasket on e-bay.

Thanks for the input. I've completed the overhaul and going to stab the engine back into the tractor today and hopefully have a running tractor this afternoon.
