I'm making a buggy with my friend, using the complete front end of my old car, a Volvo 440 Turbo Diesel. We use the complete subframe that carries engine, transmission and wheel suspension. We bought another 1.7 injection automatic, to get another subframe, which has the engine and trans removed. All we have to do is weld a frame and attach both subframes to it with 4 bolts each. Then 4 mounts for the telescopic spring carriers and we're done.
I wanted to use the diesel engine of my old car instead of the gasoline, which may be a bit more live because it doesnt have the slight turbo lag as the diesel has, but it saves us quite some $$$ when using daddy's dyed tax free agricultural diesel instead of buying petrol for 1,50 Euro per liter, and with the diesel we dont have to mess with electronic injection and ignition.
This engine puts out 90 hp and has a nice flat torque curve from 2000-4500 rpm, like an off road vehicle should have. The original car weighed 1033 kg and was quite quick, my current 440 TD is slower and is only doing 185 km/h as top speed where the old one did 200 km/h
With a pipe roll cage and square box tube frame rails, i expect the weight to be less than 600 kg, running on the original 1033 kg car suspension, which means it's going to be as fast as a brand new Golf GTI and with anti-roll torsion bars on both front and rear axle (we use two front suspensions, front and rear) we should be able to stay way ahead of the police in case we might get chased....
I think we need to pour some concrete in the front of the buggy because all the weight is in the rear end, maybe it will take off on its back wheels too easily... ???
Oh and maybe we'll close that waste gate a little bit to raise the turbo pressure... 120 hp is possible
