Greetings Everyone!

I purchased an IH 424 a couple weeks ago, and it needs some major engine work. The mechanic said that it would be $1,000 in parts and $1,000 in labor. It does run, just smokes and has blowby at the oil cap. My question is: Should I have the repairs done, or should I run it as is until I have to take it in?

I appreciate your insight; I'm a brand spankin new farmer.

Welcome to the forum. I would take it in as you don't want it to crap out on you when your in the field where its hard to get out to the shop. Driving them on the trailer is a lot easier them pushing.

Blowby typically means that it's in a repairable state. If it gets to a point where the cylinder starts to lose compression, then the cylinder may be too far out of round to fix with boring it and may require a sleeve. Rebuilding an engine when it first starts to need it will save you money and time in long run. The longer it goes, the more damage it will be doing.

I'd wonder of your uses? To only use the tractor 20 or 30 hours a year the oil would be cheap compared to an engine rebuild.
