They got it out. I was thinking try using the FEL as a slide.

Same here. As soon as I saw the front going down I thought they should have cut a couple trees inline with the tractor and let the FEL glide across the logs while lifting up all the time. Also could curl the bucket to get more lift.

The rear wheel climbing up the chain was a good move.

That one young kid got it out without busting anything. He had a watch it was probably his family tractor.

Yes chain will fly back if stretched to the breaking point. The safest bet is to use grade 80 alloy steel chain. It is designed for overhead lifting and is pre stretched in the manufacturing process, if it is pulled to the breaking point it will fall in place and not snap like other grades. It can be identified by the number 8 somewhere in the grade stamp on the links. Obviously it will be more expensive for similar sized chain of lower grades but you could probably get away with a smaller size due to the increased capacity rating.

One thing to remember is that every component in the system needs to be alloy steel rated for overhead lifting, other wise the weak link could become a projectile. The only thing keeping the injury stats down is the common practice of over sizing.

Go to the Crosby Chain web sit or any other manufacturer's web site for additional information.

Chain as tight as a piano wire pulling Brazilian Pepper tree limbs up against an embankment.
