I have kicked around the idea of trading off my 755 several times now and I just can't seem to part with it. I started having trouble with it last fall running warm and the 3ph not wanting to lower. It has 3500 hours on it now but uses no oil and really doesn't owe me anything. I looked at a real nice 4310 to replace it and decided at the last minute to just let the dealer look it over and see what all it needed to fix everything. I got a call friday saying $600 would fix it. The radiator needs replaced and there was a valve of some sort gummed up. It just cost them a sale because I am going to keep it. I told my wife I was a little sad to see it go. I know the newer ones are a lot nicer but there is something I like about it. I bought a 4700 a few years back and it is real nice but most of the time you will see me on the 755. I just need to talk her into letting me buy the 4310 and keeping the other 2 tractors LOL. One thing I am a little upset about is I put that radiator in 500 hours ago and the dealer says it is shot. He said it is all stopped up inside. He said they don't have much luck boiling them out anymore. I asked what would cause that in such a short time. He blamed it on the antifreeze. I told him it had John Deere antifreeze in it so if thats the case don't use anymore of it in there. I have had a few tell me the 55 series is better then any of the new ones. I am not sure about that but mine has been real good to me.

I don't believe I will ever part with my 755. After all these years, I am just too fond of it, plus I regret letting go of my previous two tractors.

sounds to me like you have a nice setup there with the 755 and the 4700. keep the money or spend it on something else imo

Even though I have had my 755 a great many years now, and I do keep up with new tractor offerings, I continue to appreciate it more every day. Sum total of repairs after 18 years is a water pump and an alternator. Many times when I see problems here with later model tractors, I compare the design and find that I will never have those issues with mine. If for some reason I ever did buy another tractor I would still keep the 755 for its simple reliability. It does everything I need.

You know.... there are shops out there that are FAR more qualified to assess and fix a radiator than a John Deere dealer. Pull the radiator and take it to a radiator shop and see what they have to say about it.

+1, my thoughts exactly, if the radiator was the problem I would fix it myself. I haven't looked at a new one up close lately but years ago I have removed the top sections cleaned them and replaced the top.

I can believe that. We brought our 955 back in oh, '99 and when they introduced the newer models, I started hearing about quality slipping.

We rented the 955, sight unseen, from the local JD dealer, and Dad was extremely skeptical of it due to the very small size. Luckily, looks are deceiving, and the 955 will flat out do some work. Not to mention it's quite the little mountain goat and works great in cutting firewood. The hydro transmission makes work go very fast when using the FEL. The control layout is pretty much perfect. Seriously, you can't get any better.

It's small enough to bust through the woods yet powerful enough to do FEL/grading work.

When the rental period was over, Dad called the dealership and told them not to bother with picking it up and that he'd be over to sign the papers that Monday. This is seriously the best tool we have ever purchased. We used that tractor for many years before I learned just how good they are, so I think we did pretty good with just blind luck.

I just hope that when it comes time to replace it (hopefully a LONG ways down the road), I can get something that is half the machine it is.

About the only thing I wish it had would be a fully enclosed cab with A/C and forestry type cab protection around that. That would be tops for those "fun" moments when you run over a yellowjacket nest with the bushhog. They didn't have a real large selection of cabbed compact tractors at the time, though, unfortunately...

Good post. Great story.

I have a 1992 John Deere 770. I call it excellent condition. Everything works as it should and there are no dents and few scratches. I bought it used for my first tractor, just over a year ago. Owning the jd green the pride tends to go through the roof.!! I love this little, old tractor.

That said, I am constantly looking at new tractors, mostly online. I want one. I am nearly ready to buy but, I don't think I could give up the 770.?? So, what I really mean to say is...I could buy if I get rid of the 770...don't think I am ready to do that. But it's really hard not to...:licking::confused2:

You'll have to pry my JD455 out of my hands. I kind of picked it up by accident one December day. I was a bit hesitant about it, but soon learned to love it. I was able to transfer much of my stuff from my old 318 over to the newer 455. It was a great move on my part, and I wouldn't mind having a second 455.

Now my JD790 is another story. I stumbled onto this one about 8 miles from home. It wasn't my first choice in tractors, but it had what I wanted for the jobs in mind and the location was convenient so I could ride it home. It's a great unit, but I hate the transmission. I'd much rather have an 870 with the synchromesh transmission, but that won't happen. I really don't need the 790, but I'm thinking the 790 is the most bang for the buck I will ever get. I'm still undecided about keeping it, but the thing sure is handy at times.

I will never part with my 455!!!!

Dad left this 49G Brockway behind and I'll own it forever.

In the late sixties he got the tractor and an old military bulldozer. They were used in his free time to convert a three acre swamp into a beautiful playground with three ponds for his kids. He worked two full time jobs for over thirty years.
