My wife came across this. I thought it was interesting and wondered if it actually worked or not. Has anyone seen or used one of these? In addition to splitting logs from the side I wonder if it will split a 24" long log from its end (like you would with an axe)? The one drawback is that you probably have to have a "jig" or frame to lay the log in to keep it from "twisting" on you. I think one of the photos shows something like that.

I'd guess it works better in theory than reality. You'd be a step ahead with a hydraulic PHD, since at least then you could back it out if you get it stuck. You can see the jig he has for splitting log length wood........... but how would you keep stove length wood from spinning? Maybe I'll run the tractor while you hold the wood??

The first thing that popped in my head was now it will take twice as long to saw everything to stove length. They sort of address that by saying to partially split the log, then saw, then finish splitting the last, still joined, piece. Trying to buck a partially split log would be a real pain. I usually cut logs to blocks while they are laying on the ground. Cut 3/4 way through for every block, roll it with your foot and go back finishing the cuts. You couldn't do that with a partially split log.
Now, this might be nice if you had some really large diameter logs that you wanted to split into more manageable pieces... but then if you already have a tractor and a loader they are probably still pretty manageable

One thing about ideas, as there are people there are different ways to do things. I think Rube Goldberg must have thought up that one.
I can just see a fellow standing behind that when it gets a grip on what it is splitting and it spins taking someones legs out from under them and then beating them about the head and shoulders.

Looked pretty interesting until I read the answer to the question one person asked on the ebay site. Seems like getting it stuck can be a problem and resolution takes the fun out of it.
