Seems like my 450 is getting awfully loud, not just exhaust noise, but the diesel "clatter". Little over 300 hours. Anybody else?

the old school yanmars have a deffinite hammer to them...at least the 2 cyls the 3s are not as noticible. But i would think the deisel hammer in the new ones wont be as loud?

We call that noise in our old 2 cyls the yammer hammer :)

The EX450 is a 4 cylinder. I'm over 300 hours, and the longer I use it, the louder it gets. Much louder than my old 336D was. I'm seriously considering some form of hearing protection, but I'm sure about a half hour into the job, I'd remember they were still in the barn.

I try to wear them every time i run the YM2000 but like i said that thing is LOUD! not exhaust note, that is a deep pulse but you hear the engine clacking not the exhaust. Its a joke about the horn on these tractors...whats the point if you cant hear the thing coming at you you wont hear the horn thats mostly drown out by the engine at operating speed anyway.

I insist everybody uses the headphones on mine I even bought a pair with the radios in them for less than 50 a piece. Keep telling the kids and grandkids too many years around things too close to the decibel limit make me say what after half the questions people ask me.
besides I have cabs on part of the year and talk about an amplification station that's what these Curtis cabs on both the yanmar and the Kubota are
The cabs come with lil decals telling you to put hearing protection on!!

I recently downloaded a free "Sound Meter" app for my smart phone and remembered this thread. The EX and LX 450s share the same engine so I thought I could offer a base line to compare to. These are the decibel readings I took from the operator seat while parked in an open area:

IDLE at 850rpm: 83 decibels
1000rpm through PTO Speed: 84 decibels

I thought the latter reading was interesting. It was no louder to run the tractor at 2600rpm then it was at 1000rpm--just more noise from more rpms

My LX had about 175 hrs on it at the time I took these decibel readings.

I hope that helps, if you can, download a sound meter app for your phone and report back some sound readings from your EX.

I hope the Tech's at my buddies shop sure don't find that Sound Meter! The Phones would never leave thier back pockets. And they would have proof.

Pretty interesting idea there. I picked up a small handheld sound meter from a yard sale a couple of years ago for a dollar and have yet to find a use for it. It was marketed for testing car audio equipment I think. Anyway, I was wondering about the diesel clatter from my 3 cylinder Yanmar on my JD 4200 too. This is something to compare it to at least. It's my first diesel tractor and I'm still trying to convince myself it's not falling apart when I run it.

Anybody know why a diesel rattles so much anyway? Don't mean to hijack the thread, just wondering. I wish I knew how to tell when one is getting too loud to be "right" eyecatcher. It's a good question.

Some engines require the valve lifters to be reset at about those hours.
