new Kioti EX5310 old Daedong EX50
all, been ages since I was last on TBN.

Our Daedong (Kioti) EX50 is now 15 years old has now got 975 hours on it and was due for major service.

All went well until I drained the right hand bevel gear oil, I always drain it by removing the lower rubber bearing cap – after removing the cir clip as the factory drain holes are restricted by the lower bearing covering half the hole (dumb). Anyway its best to pull the lower caps as it is the lowest point below the bearing and you get to see any wear metal that has accumulated and an insight to what is going on inside. IN MY case a piece of gear tooth was sitting in the bottom ☹ as well as some brass looking material.

So interested to see what gear the tooth had departed, I pulled the wheel bearing / bevel gear main housing off and found it was the main bevel gear has lost ¼ of one tooth – see photo. While here had a good look inside and found no other major issues, but was interested to see where the brass looking material has come from, I put a pry bar between the axle housing and the bevel housing and found around 5 mm of movement – not great. So I figured the bush in the bevel housing had a fair bit of wear in it..

Looking on here and youtube I see heaps of tractors – all brands with similar build to this are suffering failed wheel bearings when using loaders. So I have ordered all new seals, bushes, bearings , bevel main gear and the lower pinion gear as a precaution and will overhaul / rerace both sides as preventive maintenance. As I am waiting for the gears to come in – still a few weeks away I can not do the rhs yet, but today I got the lhs stripped cleaned up and reassembled, all went well and was amazed to see that the inner wheel bearing was rough to spin in my hand, I cut the outer cage off and found the inner cage had started to fail. I was a bit surprised as I change the gear oils more often than recommended (go80w90) – oils are cheap and I have full workshop facility at home so very easy to do on four post hoist.

I cant complain as 95% of the hours used has been Heavy loader work in rough & steep terrain, am I disappointed – yes, would I buy another Kioti ? , YES and I have it arrives in two days , I have purchased virtually the same tractor EX5310 manual model and we are lucky over here as it is not fitted with any DPF or emissions crap.., the old girl is going to my brother in law! And I am sure it will provide him years of great service also.

I post this info for interested people and to raise the point that if using loader a lot that it may be a good idea to at least replace your wheel bearings before failure, drain the oil via lower cap not the supplied drain plug and to at least check the brass bush by using a pry bar to check for movement.

Ill get some more pictures when I do the other side when my gears arrive, and for info the yellow stuff is gear marking compound – checking the gear contact is correct before final assembly – cheers.

my parts arrived last week to replace the cracked bevel gear on the side i have not done yet. photo above you can see quite a few teeth had cracks in them.
photo also attached of the knuckle bush showing the wear.

i couldn't understand why the bevel gear failed - until i stripped the full knuckle down and found the vertical axle shaft was fitted upside down and i put the misalignment of the gears down to this issue. i sent the tractor back while under warranty years ago ( i did a post on that for not being able to drain the oil ) anyway looks like the dealer reassembled it wrong then, i did a dummy set up of the vertical shaft fitted wrong and it only go's half way into the lower gear and i think this doesn't support the gear enough to keep it in correct position to maintain a good contact pattern. i didn't take any pics as i was a bit P##### off at the time.
with new lower gear and main bevel gear fitted and reusing the factory shims in all positions i got really good contact patterns on all four gears on each side.
i hope this helps others. funny enough if the dealer bothered to look at the workshop manual it has a large caution note to make sure the shaft goes in with the tapped hole in the up position.
