Looked at a Bolens tractor, estimated usage 800 hours, had above average smoke at start-up, and some smoke upon acceleration. Has been maltreated, stays outside, gets rain/snow on it. Still, metal work and tin are good. My question is:

What could be the source/cause of the black smoke? Dirty fuel, old fuel, more hours than I estimate? Poor injectors, unit lacks enough exercise to keep it clean and oiled up? Needs some additives in fuel to burn off carbon due to inactivity?

This is a very generic type question, hope I can get some possible and likely answers. Looks like an alright tractor.

Black smoke indicates fuel. Could be as simple as fuel filter, and as bad as injectors. I wouldn't worry a lot about it if it runs with power and doesn't smoke so bad you can't see the front of the tractor.

Do a net search for diesel black smoke causes and you should be able to find an answer. Under "normal" circumstances, diesel smoke should be clear. Upon startup white and possibly a small amount of blue isn't terrible in my opinion and white is, in fact, common especially in colder climates. Black smoke is common under heavy loading when typically more fuel gets injected into the cylinders than there is air to burn so black smoke under full/excessive load and when accelerating is not necessarily bad. Black smoke all the time indicates a problem, the simpliest usually being a restricted air intake (plugged air filter). Hope this helps.
