Has anyone made their own extension cord for their mig?

I don't know that unit, what is the voltage, amperage and how long of a cord do you need ?

That's a Hobart Handler, it'd be 220 volts, probably needing between 20 to 25 amps at full rated current.

I've priced making my own. But they're not giving away 10/3 SO wire...and the ends (plug/receptacle) aren't cheap either. I think I figured a 50 ft would wind up costing me about $85 buy the time I got everything.

Eventually I bought a 50 ft 8/3 ready-made welder extension cord off of Ebay, I think it was around $100 shipped.

I made a 25' as I recall for my Miller 210, and if memory serves me correctly, I got 30' for the price of 25' at Home Despot since the guy didn't want to leave 5' on the reel.

Just make sure you size it for the circuit, and you'll be OK. The wire will be the costliest part due to the copper in it, and I wish I could remember what I spent to make mine.

I probably have what Bill_C purchased for my HH180. It was only $60 back when I got it. Its a perfect molded cord and I can't imagine doing all that much better at the hardware store.

That's not cheap, the price shown is only for a 25 footer. Click on the dropdown box and you'll see the 50 footer almost doubles the price.

Ebay unfortunately is still cheaper, search "welder extension" and you'll find the 50 footer for $99.

Look for an RV cord off CL or FleaBay as they are often 1/2 the cost of the same cable marketed as for use with welding (second hand any way).

I have 75' of 10/3 I got when Knox Lumber closed, paid about $45 for it and that was a STEAL at the time. I use that cord with new ends as an extension cord for my MM 251, yes I know that's not enough cord for that welder at full capacity, but I never weld above 50% or ~18-22A at line voltage.
