I saw this suggestion on another thread and started thinking about it and thought I'd put it up on the forum. Your thoughts on this gentlemen??????

Where will it be mounted? Will it be protected?
Gotta weigh the positives and negatives

Engine or hydraulic oil?

Yeah, that was my question. A hydraulic cooler has been done already. There is a thread with pics somewhere here I saw last fall. It was a really nice professional looking fab.

I brought it up once to use the hydraulic oil as a heater in winter and cooler in summer. I thought it would b good idea until someone pointed out that theres over 2000 psi of oil flowing..... can you find a cooler to fit the BX to handle that pressure?

Oil coolers are always on the return side of the pump. The only pressure there will be is the amount caused by the resistance in the lines and oil filters. Maybe 30 psi.

That pressure would be at the pump though? So couldn't you tap into a non-pressurized source, of course that would mean you would need a pump too.

The cooler you keep your fluids the longer they last especially running OEM fluids.

Why would you need a pump. As long as the engine is running there is constant flow. Just tap into the return circuit before is dumps back into the sump.

To be honest I thought the hydraulics as far as the pumps were internal.

I second that...

I wonder if this would work for the engine? looks like NICE quality parts!

BUT, I would be inclined to make sure I have a heat issue like messicks
touched on before I added anything that certainly will be a maintenance
item sooner or later...

are you approaching this as a solution to a problem, or just outfitting your rig as a "project" machine?
why not leave that for the high performance vehicles & get on with the business of using your tractor for which it was designed. Don't you think the engineers would have already gone through the process?
just thinking aloud, sorry.

It has always been my belief, especially here lately that most companies are in the Parts Business. Most people won't work on stuff themselves, others won't trust anyone but a dealer to work on certain aspects of their equipment/vehicles, and others just run to the dealer period.

There are still tractors around that are 50+ years old, how many people think that their new model tractor will last that long? They just don't build them like they used to.

I agree it may be overboard if you don't have a real problem (or use your equipment in extreme conditions), but there are several items to keep in mind. Cooler fluids last longer and provide better protection, and so don't the parts that are in contact with the fluid (seals, bearing, other metal to metal contact, etc), also depending on where and the conditions, it is possible to cause over-heating (maybe not severe, but since most don't have a gauge for the fluid temp, pretty hard to know until it is too late.).

The 2012 B series now has a "tranny" cooler sitting infront of the radiator. Just an fyi....must be the engineers decided that cooler was better.

All these little hydro tractors run tranny temps at the high end of acceptable. The little fan underneath is better than nothing but not much. Any external cooler would be good. The question is will you run it long enough for the heat to kill it?? Anyone in hotter climates (not sub arctic like me) would benefit form a cooler. Just engineering it can be a problem.
As for the cooler on the B's. Well they are kind of a joke. Pipes with no fins, come on Kubota, who you fooling with that. Swapping that for a real radiator has crossed my mind but have not done it yet.

The first step in this discussion/project should be the monitoring of the actual hydro oil temps over a range of time and operating conditions. As in a permanently mounted temp gauge. If the oil consistently runs above one's comfort level (mine would be about 190 degrees F.) then a cooler would be warranted. If not, then a cooler is a waste of time & dollars.

Sometimes just the fun of a challenge is enough reward and worth the costs.

But actually monitoring the temps would be worth a start. If it is only running 150 then yea a lot of work for not much reward.

Rick b, if you did a search on bxs, you would see that bx can show higher then normal heat d during summer under heavy load sure to sensor is mounted right next to muffler
