Found one on craigs list and was thinking of picking it up for spreading ag lime. Are they worth it, or am I better off just having the truck do my fields. Last year I didn't want to take a chance with how wet the fields were. I can get 22 tons of ag lime delivered for roughly $250. That was what I was quoted this past year. I could also rent their spreader but it's a 5 ton unit and again the ground was really wet last spring. I guess when filled the drop spreader would only be about 1000lbs.

Any information anyone has on the drop spreader would be appreciated.

I guess my question would be this: How chewed up would your fields be after spreading 20+ tons @1/2 ton per trip for a total of 40+ round trips with whatever you would pull the spreader with plus the tracks of the spreader wheels vs the tracks left by their spreader truck or the 5 ton spreader?

I dont think a 1000 lb spreader would be worth it. Sounds like it would turn in to quite a bit of work/fuel/time. If you only needed to spread a few tons a year then maybe so, I would hold out for a larger spreader, or hire it out.

I believe the only benefit I could see with a drop spreader is you may not eat as much lime dust.

The EZ Flow spreaders were quite popular in their time. They don't take much hp to pull and can be pulled with a decent ATV/UTV. Rut wise you won't have as bad of ruts but you will be making a lot of trips. The lime truck will spread a wide swath at once and it will take you a ton of trips to equal one trip of the truck. I have a 5' EZ flow spreader and fixed it up so that it will work but I have never used it. It came with one of our pieces of ground we bought but I use larger spreaders as its a lot faster. If I ever have a small, tight area I need to spread lime into I may use the EZ flow but I have no desire to.

I have been looking for an EZ Flow spreader for my food plots. I got way too many trees for an applicator to even consider spreading for me. I wish I could find a 6 footer to get through some tight spots.

I had a guy call me today (from my ad on CL) and was willing to give me a ten footer that he had planned to scrap out. (maybe I will cut it down in size.) I'm going to pick it up when the snow melts......unless I find a shorter one before then.

I think being able to apply lime when you want to is one of the biggest benefits of having the spreader around. Last year we two tons of bags by hand.....and that day was ruff.

I keep going back and forth on picking up one. If the neighbor will loan me his JD 5425 if I get stuck I'll probably just use the 5 ton spreader from the guy who will deliver the bulk lime. One place charges 5 dollars an acre and the other loans it for free. After this year I pretty much know all the wet spots. Plus the guy selling the spreader hasn't emailed me back yet.

Just pulled a Ezee Flow "55" spreader out of my barn. Don't know anything about it but seems to be workable. :dance1: Under the cover there is a chart. I will try to post a picture of that later. I noticed the left side wheel has a drive bearing on it but not on the right side. The auger turns inside when pulled. Anyone know if It is supposed to have a drive gear on both sides? :confused3:

They are great for small (er) areas and save $ over pelletized lime. 8 ftr's are just right for food plots. if I had pasture or open land id want the biggest I could get. id have to weight the cost difference between a truck coming and doing it, vs having the lime pile delivered then me loading into spreader and then going to spread it.
