Myster fuel line leak

The tube shown in the picture below is leaking fuel when the engine runs. We haven't been able to find what this tube connects to, or if it's supposed to be connected at all. The open end of the tube that's leaking gas looks as though it was connected to something because it is flared out as though it had something inserted into it.

The connections on the fuel filter look fine so I don't think this leaky tube is suppose to be connected to the fuel filter. The end of fuel overflow tube has mud caked into it's open end, and maybe this is causing this fuel leak? We ran out of time yesterday and haven't tried removing this caked-on mud but it's the next thing to try on our list.

Any other ideas what this tube is and if it's suppose to connect to something?

If I had to guess, I'd say that is the carb vent tube and you have a stuck float. A stuck float can cause excess fuel to flow out of the carb vent. I'm just guessing because I can't see where the hose is actually connected. You can remove the bowl off the carb and clean everything on the bottom end of it without removing the whole carb. Make sure you shut off the fuel supply first. Like I said, I'm just guessing because I don't know if the other end is actually connected to the carb or not. That is the first thing that comes to mind for me on a random hose that is open ended and can leak fuel.

Thank. I finally found an engine reference guide and the pic below shows part 92190 as my tube that is leaking gas. Does this part jive with your assessment?

I would also guess its some kind of vent and that some type of small filter is supposed to be attached to the end of 92190A. See the pictured hose clamp -92037A - I'll bet its supposed to hold a small filter on the end.

Good catch, but I think 92037A is a different piece, connecting to the air filter.

You are so right, there Thraug - and the PC/liberal chant - - "no release of a hydrocarbon before its time".

Yea, it looks like it is the carb vent tube. You might want to check the price of a new carb before deciding on what to do. A lot of times I will just replace the whole carb if it is not too expensive and then I'll rebuild the old one over the winter so I have a spare. At the minimum, you should consider getting a rebuild kit for the carb if you are going to be taking it apart to clean it. Getting a new carb with gaskets is faster to change out than rebuilding a carb. Keep in mind that something is probably causing the float to stick and that could have gotten into the other parts of the carb as well. It also could be something else in the carb causing the issue but a stuck float can definitely cause the problem.

I've had rust from the tank hold a float from closing before, or a pin hole leak in the float will do the same thing.
