Yanmar F14D, DR Wheeled Trimmer
I've been having trouble getting the PTO drive shaft QR to engage at the tractor end. I thought the QR was faulty but now I think its due to the short length of the output shaft. I've bought an overrun clutch that is secured with a roll pin, which I need to drill the hole in the output shaft for. When marking for drilling, I noticed it is very close to the end of the shaft.

So, does my Yanmar have an unusually short PTO output shaft and does anyone else have trouble getting QRs to lock on properly as a result?

Once the clutch is fitted, it wont be a problem, but I'm curious to know.

I don't know anything about how long the F14's output shaft is supposed to be, but if it were mine I would modify the quick release before I drilled the tractor, if possible. I have a PTO driven concrete mixer that uses a set-screw type retention system that might work in your application too.

I don't think I have an option other than drilling to secure the clutch, and I can't see that causing an issue anyway. Modifying the clutch is likely to interfere with the ratchet mechanism. Once the clutch is on, I'll be left with a proper length output shaft and my QR drive shaft will fit fine.

I can tell you the machined recess on my 2002D is 1-1/2" back from the end of the shaft. The hole for the pin is 1" back from the end of the shaft.

I can also tell you it is hardened steel. Not only would it be hard to drill but would also weaken your shaft. Maybe the F14 isn't hardened but I suspect it is. Touch a file to it and see what happens.

I find it interesting some tractors have the hole and some don't. I have an old Internaional 424 in my garage right now and it does not have a hole in it. Only the machined recess. It is also hardened.

I know for certain, the shaft is case hardened, and also hardened in the centre, hence the hole in the end. A normal HSS bit won't go anywhere. However, drilling is no problem, I reground a masonry bit which went through without too much difficulty. It's a good trick my Dad taught me if you need to get through anything hardened.

I'll measure properly later, but to fit the PTO clutch I have, the roll pin hole has ended up only about half an inch from the end of the shaft
