I have a question regarding my F22D with no power steering. I was told that the steering box is sealed on this tractor and do not need to add oil or service it. Is this true? I know the YM series need to be lubricated. Just want to be on the safe side. Thanks

It has a fill plug on it 1/4 PT.

Alright, I found the fill plug, it looked like a newer plug and had teflon tape thred sealer on it. I unscrewed it and found grease inside the box, now I have heard that 90w oil needs to be in the YM's there but why is there grease inside my F22? At this point the steering works OK and I would really not want to remove the whole steering shaft assy to replace the grease with oil. I am thinking that possibly the steering shaft/pitman arm seal was leaky and someone just filled the box with grease? is the grease sufficiant lubrication for the bearings in there? What would you guys recomend?

I would fill it with, (add), 140w until it runs out the hole.

Norm, I was thinking the same thing just wasnt sure. I think I will just fill it with gear oil, Im hoping it will mix OK with the grease thats in there. The grease looked golden and not black/pasty so hopefulley all should be well. FYI its much easier to check the fluid on the F' series tractor, all you have to remove is the bottom cover below the dash and the fill plug is in front not in the back like the YM's. Thanks

That sounds like some of that JD "Corn Grease", like someone put it in there exactly because it was leaking. I think I'd leave it alone if it's working OK, unless you want to pull it and reseal it.......

Well I ended up filling it with /140wt gear oil, so far no leaks from the seal. I also lubed all the steering joints and steering feels easier to turn. Thanks for the replys
