My '72 Ford 3000 started having problems early this year with unspent fuel blowing out the exhaust. The injectors were rebuilt 2 years ago and the injector pump was also rebuilt. The motor has been completely rebuilt; new pistons, rings and one sleeve. The heads were also reworked. What could cause this?? I'm think that maybe one of the injectors may have gotten clogged and is dripping fuel into the cylinder and is not burning?? Any ideas before I start tearing things apart?

does it smoke when u first start it up and then quit after running for a little bit if so it sounds like a injector not seating all the way if i was u i would pull them off and pop test them to check the pressure to make sure they are set right and check the tips like u said that is most likely the problem

but try and run some marvel mystery oil or seam foam first threw it first and see if that wont clean the injectors try and put it right into the filters or right into the pump

Have you checked the return line ? When running open the fuel cap and there is a return that should be pumping fuel back in the tank around below the opening of the cap. Also on your rebuild has the engine been worked hard enough to break the rings in ?

Ditto that.. do you work her or play with her.

diesels will slobber bad when cold and idles and unworked.

try working the snot out of her for a few hours and see if it celars up any.

I've work it pretty hard; mowed 10 acres once and sprayed it twice and drug a chain harrow around it. The rings should be set.

The thing smokes pretty good when I start it. You really can't tell so much when it's running unless you bump the throttle, then you can tell that she is still smoking; like a bad habit. The worst part is the fumes. It'll make you nauseous when the wind is to your back.

I haven't thought about the fuel return line. I'll check that before pulling injectors.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks for the tips.

Check the intake manifold to see whether the thermostart unit is leaking fuel when it shouldn't.
