F725 fuel tank vent hose

The hose is falling apart. It winds around the top of the tank before going down the side. Is there a reason for such a long hose? What problems would I have if I just run a short hose?

I just left mine with a short piece on top of the tank.

F725 is rear engine with a tank on the left side of the seat. Not any chance of the vent dripping on the engine.
