I'm fabricating a subframe on my tractor for a front blade and want to tack weld to parts bolted onto the tractor. Am I going to fry the electricals on the tractor with welding on the tractor itself? Disconnect the battery? Of course take precautions with fire, but with the ground clamp on the parts bolted to the tractor, I'm unsure. Any help appreciated...

Disconnect the battery and you should be fine. Just make sure no fuel or oil is leaking that could catch fire.

This is an old riddle, will it or won't it????
The company that I worked for back in the low 70's had us disconnecting battery cables before welding. I ask my Father (an Electronics Tech) and my Brother (a Motorola Tech) and both laughed! They said as long as I didn't weld on any of the electric wiring or electrical components it made no sense.
Today is a little different because vehicles with computers can be more sensitive.
But ask yourself this- How many people on service trucks disconnect their truck battery before welding from the welder attached to the truck? It's common for the welder to be running off of the truck battery and be grounded to the truck.

last subframe I made was for my woods 6500 hoe on a ford 850.. it had an alternator.

I tack welded on that machine for hurs getting the frame lined up.

no issues. didn't disconnect anything....

have welded drawbar brackets on other similar tractors with alternators.

only time I disconnect an alt is if I'm welding .. say.. on it's bracket or right in it's vicinity..

your call.

For the 2 min it might take you to disconnect it why are you worried about it? Btw, I really like the subframe plow mount. I made one for my dad's b7510 and it worked great! We used the loader hydraulics to run the plow but we had to have chains on the front tires to turn that baby when it was pushing a pile! You can't stack it quite as high as with a loader, but its almost fearless when your pushing and since its so much closer to the front end, you can really manuver well! I suggest making a removeable lifting post for the plow as well so you can leave the subframe on and pull the lifting arm and be able to put your loader back on.

There was a thread on this a long time ago by ASGAR I believe.
