Yanmar YM2000
MY YM2000 is going to have to undergo yet another lower hose replacement. The fan belt is flexing some and rubbing a groove in the lower hose. The last time, I made sure the belt was good and tight and yet now another hole. Any suggestions? I thought of a slightly longer belt and seeing if I can pull the alternator down more to lower the belt position. Other thought was wrap an aluminum can around this area.

Or zip tie your Radiator hose back or buy the correct hose and not some generic one. There are literally thousands of ym2000's out there without this problem including my own?

My YM240 (YM2000) had this problem when I bought it. The short-term prior owner had botched everything he touched. In this case the lower radiator hose was brand new genuine Yanmar - and was already chewed halfway through from the fan belt slapping against it.

I wrapped it with heavy (.010 - .020??) two inch wide electrician's tape then put a hose clamp where the belt was close, with the clamp's smooth side facing the belt.

The 'hose armour' did the job. That 'reconditioning' was in 2003 and it hasn't leaked yet.

I wouldn't overtighten the belt. That can destroy the bearings in the ancient alternator or water pump. If the belt doesn't slip, its tight enough.

I used to do that on my Rambler. It works.

One of the MTC guys for our village, gave me a clamp used to pipes. Got a SS exterior and rubber inside. I'll put it on tomorrow with the new hose.

Well, the clamp was too big but I was able to use a piece of aluminum coke can and wrap the hose and use a clamp. Seems to be working well.

Keep an eye on the coke can. You can wear a hole in that thin aluminum pretty quickly. I'd recommend using a steel can when you have to replace the aluminum can.

i've used clamps to move / shrink hoses too.

also.. I have added idler pullies to engines, using off the shelf pullies with sealed lubed bearings and simple brackets that generally mount off the alternator lower mount.. etc. worked great on my ford 2n keeping the belt off the front distribuitor, but letting the alternator stay high and tight so no steering arms would ontact it on an incline, as many alternator conversions suffer, since the alts are wider and usually set out wider.

my whole point is something is amiss? & understand how and why this can happen on a tractor with parts made to work, like a 60 yr old tractor with upgraded larger alts, but if your tractor has stock parts WHY is it rubbing?
