I received the following email from a friend. Names have been removed.

"In case you have not heard, my younger brother was in a farm accident.

He was in a corn field counting rows and my nephew did not see him and brother did not hear the combine coming. Result, the combine hit him and severed the leg bone or bones between his knee and ankle. Brother is being stabilized now, and will go into surgery on Wednesday to clean up the wound and determine the next steps."

One can be maimed or killed in so many different ways on the farm. The brother must have lost all hearing or was listening to music. I don't know. My friend is well into his 70's so the brother is in his late 60's or early 70's.

Reminds me of the story I read of a young black teenager who was killed a couple months ago in Newberry, SC as he was walking down a set of RR tracks. He was walking between the rails, and listening to music playing through a device such as a phone or ipod. A train came up behind him and literally ran him over!!! You wonder how could he have not year the train whistle? You know the engineer was laying down on it!
