Farm Pro 2420 Problem

The parts supplier suggested loosening the injector pump and rotating it till the engine sounds the best. What do you think?

Is this the same parts supplier that told you to adjust your valves to 14mm and 16mm? Not a wise thing to do for a LOT of reasons. While diesel engines are not rocket science, they still run and last as designed when set to specs. Suggest you check and set the fuel delivery timing per the engine specs.

Glad that you're up and running again. Didn't know originally that it sat idle for two years. Good work.

All the work I have done has greatly improved the running of the tractor but it still is running on the back cylinder only for the first minute or two on first start up. I wonder if it could be getting air in the injector line on that cylinder and having to over come that before it fires on that cylinder. I think before I start it again I will try bleeding that injector line first. I have noticed some fuel dampness around that injector and tightened everything but could not tell where it was coming from. Any thoughts?

I'm reviving this old thread. I've had this tractor since April and still have the same problem with it. I have come to the conclusion that when it sits and cools off it leaks diesel at various places on the injection pump allowing air to get in the system. The question I have is it possible to replace seals or gaskets to stop the leaks without causing damage to the pump?

I believe I've been over this before, but the only lip seal in the fuel injection pump is the camshaft seal behind the drive gear, and the only gaskets are between the pump assembly and the governor, and the fuel cavity cover plate (if so equipped). Repair parts are not sold or available here. I'm curious as to how you arrived at your conclusion about "..... when it sits and cools off it leaks diesel at various places on the injection pump allowing air to get in the system." Are these external leaks?

Yes when it's running it doesn't leak. When it cools it begins to seep near where the top of the pump bolts to the top of the pump. Also the priming pump leaks badly when you use it and quits leaking when you stop using it. When it starts it starts back without problem until you let it sit over night. There is plate on the side with phillips head screws in it behind the primer pump that I thought it might be seeping from. It acts like air in the system that it has to overcome so I figured if fuel can get out air can get in.

If this is your pump it could be that the pressure regulating check valve assembly (#36, 37, 38, 39, 40) is gummed up and allowing fuel from the cavity to drain back, emptying the cavity. #51 is the fuel cavity cover plate. You can make a new gasket for this yourself, they are not available to my knowledge.

If this is your pump, you are SOL. They are no longer available and you will have to upgrade to the above pump.

Mine is the upgraded pump. #36 tru #40 is located where #26 thru #28 is in the diaghram. The previous owner had the pump put on. Do you think he installed that valve on the wrong side? If you look at post #9 you can look at my pump and see how it is set up. Thanks for any help you can give me.

It can go on either side as long as you don't try to pump fuel through it from the banjo fitting side. Your plumbing is fine the way it is.
