Farmall 140
I just purchased 15 acres and was given
A farmall 140 with a woods belly mower on
It and I was wondering about how safe it is
To mow on hillsides with this tractor my land is
Not real steep but there are some rolling hills
And bumpy ground in the pasture

I'm a farmall guy. I can tell you that it's no less safe than any other tractor. You just need to know it's limits. It does have a higher center of gravity than some of the newer compact tractors. If you're worried about rolling, go up and down instead of across the hill.

Wheel weights for that tractor are very heavy (140lbs each) and lower the center of gravity a great deal. I would recommend them as the wheels tend to be on the light side without them - they'll help prevent sliding on the hills, too. I have a set here in RI that I'd part with - where are you located?

You can also set the front axle to the widest setting and dish out the rear wheels for a wider stance.

Thanks for your input I've used this tractor before and never had any problems but I was around 12 or 13 years old and did not understand the consequences of haveing a tractor on top of me but people have just told me they can be tippy I live in northern Kentucky I'll have to check in the barn at my uncles place to see if they have any weights if not how much would u want for
Yours and one more question do u know a good way to make a 3 point hitch set up for a 140

I don't know about a 3pt. setup for the 140. KY is a bit far to sell my weights. The shipping would be ridiculous. They're easily found though. Very common and fit many diff. tractors. Try ebay and craigslist.

A 140 being offset actually does pretty well on hillsides if you put the engine side up hill. Be careful on the bumps, my great uncle rolled his 140 when bushhogging. Ran up on a stump that was covered, it pinned him under the tire and seat. Nearly blew his eyes out of his head from the pressure. He survived and the tractor still runs like a well oiled sewing machine. I wouldn't have a clue about a 3 point hitch, the 1 point hitch is awesome for switching equipment, probably not as strong as a 3 pt, but a 140 isn't the strongest tractor either.

Depends on the slope angles.
I have a 1951 Farmall Super A with a belly-mounted sicklebar mower. I came close to rolling that tractor while mowing ditches around my place. So be careful--those old tractors can be pretty tippy.

Also, you can get some nasty surprises when you're mowing unfamiliar fields for the first time (gopher holes, crap in the weeds, etc). My advice is to walk the field before you mow, especially if the weeds are real tall. I walked my 10 acre place before my first mowing. Weeds were waist high. I found old t-posts, concrete blocks, and an enameled bathtub being used as a watering trough hidden in the weeds. Also several fox dens.

Just be careful out there.

I have to agree with Nspec, the tractor is only going to be as unsafe as the operator allows it. Get familiar with it, don't run it when your tired, in a hurray etc...know the limitations

I was just doing some mowing with my 140 I just got someone on here told me on here to adjust the front end out to it's widest setting and flip the back rims around to give it a wider stance how much more stable does it make the tractor now it is set up for cultivating tabaco so I think it is all the way in let me know what u all think about this thanks
