Farmall 706 carb problem

I have a Farmall 706 (just bought) that seems to have carb problems. The tractor had been sitting all winter; may have had some old gas in it. It sputtered and died while discing. I could start it and get it to move with the choke out but it quits when the choke is pushed in. A friend thought I had a sticky needle.
Questions: Is that likely? If so how do I fix it? Am I looking at a carb re-build? Should I run premium gas in this? Do I need some sort of "lead" additive in the gas?

He may be correct.

If it was mine I would run a mix of 2 oz of Sea Foam to a gallon of gas.

Everytime it runs and sits it will clean it some. If it has five gallons in the tank I would put a 16 oz can in three gallons of the best gas you can buy and run it dry.

As long it is not loading up (running rich). I have a generator that has since new required a little choke to run smooth.

The Sea Foam will not FIX a defective carb part but it it will start to clean it and combustion chamber plus the fuel tank.

So many put on a new carb and trash it with the trash still in the tank.

The old back hoe 60 HP JD diesel we just got did not idle smoothly so I put in 7 gallons treated heavily with Sea Foam and it got to running much better. By that time I could tell it seemed like it was going to be a keeper so I filled it to the tip top with Sea Foam treated fuel. By the time that 19.5 gallons is gone it will have washed down the sides of the tank starting at the filler cap.

Unless there are performance issues I like to do this before I change out the fuel filter. Of course a lot of gravity flow gas tractors really can not use much more than a screen filter because that is not lift pump to force it through much of a filter media.

Let us know how it goes. Use with fresh gas is good for on that has set.

there is a good chance you have some dirt or something in you carb, and it is getting picked up , or it is in the seat, or you have some dirt in the tank and it is getting sucked up in the pickup tube, its hard to tell without getting into it too much,

I would look at the sediment bowl and see what condition the gas is in, it will be a tell tale sign of what is getting in your carb,, if its dirty you will have junk in your carb until you fix that problem,,

I may try a in line filter if there is some rust and junk showing, you may have to change it once in a while but you wont have to "rebuild your carb every time it acts up,,

you will probably have to take the carb off and apart ,, take out the seat and clean it out, you might as well change the needle and seat while you are at it,,get a basic carb rebuild kit, it comes with new seat gaskets and such,, as long as it was running decent before you had the trouble of it stopping you may get away with that,,

as far as adding lead, you dont have to , never found a need,, and as far as premium gas, I wouldnt waste my money, you dont need it either,,

you could run it with the choke pulled, but you arent doing yourself any favors, you will foul out your plugs and it is a pain,,

not saying I havent done it to a few of my tractors to get through a bind but they all need to fixed of the problem eventually, the old saying totally applies pay me now or pay me later, good luck,pat

My son bought a 460 Farmall in the same condition as yours and ran into the same exact problems. After doing all the above mentioned tasks and tricks, he finally took off the tank and cleaned it out and put on a new carb. Been purring like a kitten last 2 seasons! Ken Sweet

Sometimes just letting it run awhile will help clear things up, but nothing is going to work better than taking the carb off and cleaning it out.

Remove the hose connecting the air cleaner and carburator, get the motor running up near wide open and put your hand over the carb mouth, so as to completely shut off the air flow and hold it there till the motor almost stalls. This will suck any debris through the high speed jet; you may have to repeat several times, but it seldom fails to work for me, and is easier, quicker and cheaper than pulling the carb. If this doesn't work, then you have little choice but to clean and rebuild

With a tractor this is the best route to take without question because it is a simple task unlike with a car or truck in most cases.

Any old new to you tractor needs the valves checked and on some that requires pulling the gas tank so one can kill two birds with one stone.

We use clean marble sized pea gravel mixed with gas to shake around and clean the inside of the tank. Usually do this then empty and repeat the process the second time then rinse 2-3 times with gas only. Ken Sweet
