I have a couple problems. I have a 1953 Farmall cub we rarely used, so figured to sell it. It sat over the winter. Went out today to check oil and start it. Dip stick was 2 inches above full. Took oil pan plug out and straight coolant, about a quart flowed out and then the oil. I don't know much about engines but know this is bad. I want to sell this like I said, but don't know how to fix. Question is should I find a fix or not. If not then how do I list this tractor not wanting to screw anyone? Also, how do I price it? Thanks

I believe that this is a wet sleeve motor like my Farmall B. On my tractor I would get small amounts of coolant in the oil over time. I suspected that the orings that seal the liner to the block had gotten hard and would let some coolant get by. I put some stop leak in it and started using it more regularly and it stopped using coolant after awhile. I would guess that you might have the same situation at play. The main thing is not too let too much coolant sit in the oil pan. Coolant be hard on bearing surfaces.

This is a easy fix engine. take off the pan and can see which sleeve is leaking. may be cheaper to purchase new sleeve with piston rings and bearing gasket kit. remove bearing cap
remove head and use wood block from bottom of engine tap the sleeve loose lift out .
there is good chance of trash rust gunk needing to be cleaned out of build up around the sleeve.
I normally replace all 4 sleeves and bearings
when back together adjust valves and have a have a rebuilt engine .

My F-Cub blew a head gasket which was about $200 to fix. The lucky part was all my head bolts/studs came loose without breaking. Once The Cub is not a wet sleeve its a flat head motor with water channels like a typical engine. You could have a slow/small head gasket leak or a cracked block. Was that straight water or fresh good anti-freeze? I would NOT put stop leak in it, because that will make the fix much worse for the next person.

The first thing in buying and selling a cub is, is the motor free(not stuck), If you don't want to fix it just be honest about the issue. Some collectors, rebuilders would still be interested. Check out farmallcub.com

I don't want to try and fix this. I want to get rid of it soon. Want to be honest and state the issues but don't know how to discount the tractor. It had pure anti freeze so I know it didn't freeze. Also, how do I state the problem, just say it gets coolant in the oil?

I'd be honest, and say just that. And also if the engine is stuck. If it has the crank with it, just see if it will slightly turn. If you do post an ad on say Craigslist, guarantee 99.9% will be asking that question. If it's not, most definitely say that in the ad, whether it is, or isn't.

I'm believe Cubs were pretty notorious for warped heads, and many warped beyond planing it flat. Used to be you could get an after market head for around $100. Last I looked, they were up to around $200.

As for price to ask depends on the condition and region, and if it has any implements with it. In areas where the organic food boom is going on, it may be worth a bit more to some if it would happen to have cultivators with it. But I wouldn't expect top get a lot out of it, in that condition.

Just started tractor. It makes a thumping sound in the engine.

Randy the comment not sleeve engine sure caused me to recheck .
Then realized I had gotten confused with then A B and C engine using kit Pk154 up to ser#310299
And rereading the OP 1953 Cub.
Sorry if leading anyone astray on repairing a Cub.

The factory Cub engine does not have sleeves. However, some folks have installed sleeves on worn cylinders that are so worn that 0.060" oversize rings are will not fix a low compression problem.

This is the top of the block in my 1948 Cub.

Was this Cub stored outdoors without a cap on the exhaust pipe to keep water out?

Could be a cracked block or a warped head which would cause the head gasket to leak.

Pull the plugs. See if you can detect water or water/oil on the sparking end of the plug. Look for water in the cylinders by cranking the engine and watching for any fluid coming out of the plug holes in the block.

Good luck.

You said it had PURE ANTIFREEZE in it. I am hoping you did mix it 50/50 with distilled water! If not it could have frozen over the winter.
