A Saskatchewan farmer did the same thing a couple of years ago. While repairing a stone picker his hand got caught when the reel moved, the machine was not running thank God. After being trapped for a couple of days he decided that the only way to get out was to cut off his hand. Scary to think about being in that situation.

The father of the farmer who lives a few miles down the road from my property got his hand caught in a hay baler. He was an old man at the time. He yanked it back out but all the skin on the top of his hand stayed in. It was such a large area that the surgeons tucked his hand into the skin of his lower abdomen. It had to saty that way for weeks. Then, once all that was healed, they removed his hand but took the patch of abdominal skin with the hand and then just close the abdominal wound. Weird stuff.

This was nearly 20 years ago. He is dead now, but I remember visiting him in the hospital (I was a med student) and seeing his hand stuck down there. The restricted movement was a misery for him but in the end he was lucky to have kept his hand.

I think reconstructive plastic surgeons do some of the most important, life altering work in medicine. Unfortunately they get lumped in with the guys who do all the elective and purely vanity based cosmetic surgery, who are in the majority (more money in making pretty people prettier than making a burn victim less hideous). I certainly hate to step on any toes, especially since I am friends with some of these guys....but they pretty much earn their reputation.

Of course, many do both cosmetic and reconstructive.

I was actually surprised to learn a while ago that many of the Army doctors are plastic surgeons. It makes sense when you think about it though. They do amazing things whether reconstructive or elective.
